<< If that IBM Intellistation had Power4 processors in it, I would take it over the other workstations. >>

IBM does not yet have a desktop workstation based on the Power4 CPU.

<< BUT, for now I would take the Fuel with dual 600/4MBL2. SGI definitely has the best design team, and I own one of their monitors, so i'm kinda partial to them. >>

The SGI Fuel is not a dual processor system like the older Octane2.

<< Alpha? >>

The Compaq AlphaStations have been using the same PowerStorm graphic accelerators for years now, but I'll add one to the list nevertheless.

Seems like it should be Sun no contest then.

Not if you're an animator, though. All of Sun's graphic accelerators (even the new XVR-1000) have poor fill rates. And SGI is still the only company that makes a desktop workstation (or any computer for that matter) that is capable of 48-bit RGBA.

Well, maybe you should start with that. Clearly someone needing a CAD workstation and an animation machine would buy different machines. I would say for general purpose workstation, Sunblade is better, but if you are specifically interested in animation, read up:
