which nvidia card to buy?

I bought a 9800pro recently (the msi one on newegg) and, while it was certainly fast enough, it couldn't run some games (*ehem* kotor) properly so back it went

anyway, I am now looking for a comparable nvidia card... it looks like some version of a 5900 would be ideal but I have no clue which variety/company would be best

I am hoping to spend about $175 (the amount I got back from my 9800 pro), maybe a little more

thanks

at that price point the 9800pro was your best bet.

The only Nv card I would recommend might be the 5900nu. Not the XT, the regular vanilla 5900.

at the $300 price point, get the 6800nu.

Rage187 is right. If your budget is ~$175, the MSI 9800 Pro from Newegg was the best choice you made since it has an R360 (9800 XT) core, therefore you could've flashed and OC'ed it to a 9800 XT.

Forget about a 5900 since it'll be out of your budget (~$300). The closest 5900 series card in your budget would probably be a 5900 XT (~$175), but a 9800 Pro will blow the 5900 XT away so you shoulda kept your MSI 9800 Pro.

And like Rage187 said, for $300 you'd be better off getting a regular 6800.

I agree entirely with the above post. :)

You already got rid of the R9800Pro? If you do the driver shuffle then you could have gotten your games to work(I think it was 4.2s that worked well with KOTOR for me, maybe it was Cat 3.10s though). Grab the best FX5900 you can find if you don't want to deal with it, likely the 5900XT or wait a little bit and see where the 6600GTs land in terms of price. Should be comparable to a R9800Pro/5900 but with better feature support and without the 59xxs lack of PS performance.

I wouldn't say that the 9800Pro blows away the 5900XT. It certainly does better than it but not blow it away. I have the MSI 5900XT w/VIVO and it OCs up to Ultra levels, even though that is way past the memorys theoretical maximum. 1mhz aove ultra levels and you get major artifacts though. Blazing fast. I would highly recommend it or the MSIRX9800Pro.

I appreciate the advice guys... although there seems to be a lot of telling me what I already know, that the 9800 pro was/is my best bet... that's why I bought it in the first place :p. I tried the driver shuffle and it worked to some extent but there were still some graphical glitches and I decided I just didn't want to deal with it. speed is less important to me than functionality which is apparently not a widely held opinion :). anyway, I think i'll hold off on a video card for now... thanks for the info
