#2. Wouldn't pass up the money unless I had much better things to do with the few extra hours. I kind of like that schedule, too. Three days off, all during the week. I like to do things on my days off and there's very little that I do, even hiking in a wilderness area, where it isn't less crowded on weekdays.

#1. Rather work a couple extra hours and four days for the same pay as working five days of similar shifts.

#3. If I had a second job.

None of the above. I've turned down some pretty decent jobs over the years because it was graveyard shift. I can deal with swing shift, but not graveyard. Fuck that.
Dark time is for sleeping...NOT for working.

#2 is essentially what I work but its 7p to 7a and days change. Usually 4 in a row but I've done like 8 before. So I'd go with that. I get paid for 40 hours though, but get more time off. Basically our schedules are 160h 4 week periods. I had a stretch of like 9 days off a while back, just how the schedule fell.

Nice thing with nights is you don't get cumulative exhaustion the more days you work since you don't have to get up early.

one or three depending on how much you tolerate dirt. Working weekend nights? f that. People work too much, work is stupid.

doh.. weekends/m+t = work 32hrs, get paid 58hrs, not 54.

That's what masks, goggles and showers are for

dust masks make my safety goggles fog up.

so I can only wear one or the other, not both 🙁

It can be tough, but you can manage. I wear glasses and have to wear masks from time to time. It does require a bit of adjustment to avoid the fogging up.

If you need the money #2. If you don't need the money, #1.

I happen to like the sound of a 3 day weekend and a regular schedule. But that's your call.

What sucks is safety glasses over regular eye glasses. So glad I got lasik and that's not an issue anymore. I do find safety glasses do tend to fog up on me too though if I have them on for long so have to occasionally take them off just to clear the fog and let my face cool down. Almost need some that have a small fan or something. 😛

So don't get a cheap-ass dust mask. Get something decent, at least an R95 mask.

To the original topic I wouldn't take any if I could possibly avoid it.

hell. if I have to buy my own, I'd buy something like this:

or even a re-usable lvl4 contagion mask that u see in the movies

Thing to consider too is, whether you work 8 hours or 12, it's still a day of work. Your day is used up and you can't really do much else. May as well work 12's and either get paid more, or get more days off. It's also nice to have time off during the week, as it makes running any errands easier as everything is open.

I always ask for more 12's, so I usually work 3 sets of 4 12's, and 2 8's somewhere, and that covers my schedule. Sometimes I take a floater on the 8's if there's enough people in. Which reminds me, think I still have some from last year I need to use up.

I would have so much trouble going back to 8*5 again. 2 day weekends are just not long enough.

?

There's an enormous difference between working 8 and 12 hours in a day. There's a lot you can do in those additional 4 hours you have free working an 8 hour day.

Not really, you still have to go to bed early so you can get up the next day (or in case of night shift sleep during the day), You still have to prepare supper, and do regular stuff like that, you might get a few extra hours but that's basically just time sitting around at home. You can't plan to do anything major like work on a home project, it's not really enough time. You also can't run any errands since everything is closed. Having more full days off is better than having a few hours extra in a day that you have to be at work.

4 hours is 4 hours.

I can drive 30 minutes to a great fishing spot, fly fish for 3 hours, drive home.

Drive 45 minutes to the closest drop zone, make 2 or 3 jumps, drive home.

Spend 3 1/2 hours painting the upstairs, 30 minutes cleaning up after.

Spend 4 hours reading a great book.

Watch 2 movies.

Go to the gym and work out for an hour, shower, go grocery shopping at three different markets, stop at the liquor store, stop at the department store and buy a couple shirts, pick up my dry cleaning. And probably still have time to take a little nap.

Take a 3 hour mountain bike ride.

Big home project? I can put in 20 hours of work in the evenings over the course of a five-day work week. That's like one damned LONG weekend of doing the same thing and it's less tiring.

Sounds like you don't manage your time very well.

Remember, Red Squirrel is a Canuck, so when he's not working, all he has to occupy his time is sit in his cave igloo and chew raw meat...so working is the good life for him.
