Hey I'm considering buying a new graphics card. I'm chosing between the 9600 Pro and the TI4800. Are there any other suggestions? I have about $150 and it will be used for gaming. Any thoughts will be helpful.

You dont wanna do that.
At the moment, nVidia cards suck at DX9 stuff. So it aint gonna be very futureproof.

Well besides that flame bait for nvidia fans... lol.

The Gf4's will pound out more in performance than the 5600fx, specially with those classic drivers. The 5800's and 5900's are a different story but those are a lot more than 150 dollars.

 
Well i haven't seen anyone recommend to our friend the 9600pro! How bout that?

Seriously 9600pro seems to be the best choice for you, with second choice a 9600pro. LOL

That is of course if u do care for dx9 games.Cauz if u don't just look at GF4 TI's.
 
right outa the box and for todays games, the 4800 will get higher frames. but if your looking at DX9 games, the 9600pro will score higher frames in that category. so it depends on which way you look at it.

Very true. The 4800 is a killer of a card, it's very very fast. The ONLY problem that I see is that it doesn't support DirectX9. Currently, no games actually use DX9 though. HL2 will use DX9 but it is not required, the 4800 would be forced to use DX8.1 I think it is.

The choice doesn't really depend on what you plan on playing. It's not like companies are just going to completely cut off support for DX8.1; that would be financial suicide. The choice between the 4800 and the 9600 Pro is about quality vs speed in future games. Do you want to play HL2 in DX9 quality or DX8.1 quality?

I personaly would take the 4800 simply because my computer isn't very fast and I need to get every fps out of my video card that I can. If your computer is like a 3ghz P4 with HT or something similar, it would probably be best to take the 9600 Pro.
 
Well Shawn...I consider my computer to be pretty fast. It's no 3ghz HT p4 or anything, but its an xp2600 oc'd to a 3200 running at a 400mhz fsb. So I guess the 9600 pro is the way to go. Also, since dx9 is not supported, does this mean that I will NOT be able to play hl2 and doom 3 at all? Or will some quality just be missing. I intend to buy both of those games as soon as they go out, and I don't want a card that will make that impossible.

You will be able to play HL2 but it will run in DX8.1
I've seen pictures comparing DX9 to DX8.1 and I can't even tell the difference. I don't exactly know what the difference is. I'm not too concerned about getting all I can out of DX9 since I can't even get everything out of DX8.1. Your computer is pretty fast though; you would probably be better off using DX9.

Lack of DX9 will not affect Doom3 at all. Doom3 uses OpenGL.
 
You will be able to play them but without the new features like pixel shader 2.
If that happened with the games we wouldn't be able to play new games every time a new gpu arrived.
That's the beauty and the curse of a PC man!
 
OK, well I think it's obvious that I need to get the ati card, but before I settle just yet....it seems that the 256mb version is around the same price as a 9500 pro.....any recommendation on which of those? Thanks!!!

the extra 128 is virtually useless for todays games esp on the 9600 pro
