We still have rights protected under our constitution that prevent our govt from steamrolling us for now. Our layers of govt ensure radical changes dont take hold immediately. One person cant dictate what is going to happen(yet).

That is true for every single democracy in the world. Nothing "best" about that.

All of it, more or less. It seems designed for uniting very different states at a time where long-distance communication was hard and slow. Which, of course, is exactly what it is.

The current budget crisis is a prime example. A similar situation in most other democracies would immidiately trigger the resignation of parliament, and a new election.

The 2-party system is a bad idea as well.

It seems like one of the big problems with the way we elect government representatives is that it emphasizes representation based on locality and not ideology. Perhaps it made sense when the nation was founded. However, today the practical effect seems to be disenfranchisement--people can't vote for representatives who represent their ideology.

In contrast, if representation were based more on the percentages of the population that back a particular ideology, we might see these types of political parties:

• Christian Fundamentalists.
• Islamic
• Libertarian
• Tea Party
• Moderate Republicans
• Moderate Democrats
• Labor/Socialist
• Women's Party
• Green Party
• Nazi

The biggest issue is that essentially while we say we have 2 parties they are really two sides of the same coin of private and public interests.

In other words most of our problems arise due to the fact that Americans are stuck and often pigieoned hold into picking from two terrible choices. Then again that is also the fault of most Americans who have a limited vision capacity to vote outside of the box, so to speak. In the end its political competition that needs to ramped up so that neither two parties feel comfortable with always getting lock-step votes and that basically translates into allowing more political parties to enter the arena of competition.
