Which name should I go by?

My legal first name is Francis and my middle is Linh. But I was born Linh as my first name and changed it to Francis when I was in 1st grade. When I was living in California, I went by Linh up until 8th grade, which was when I moved to Ohio and now I go by my legal name, Francis. Convoluted, huh? Anyway, I'm going off to college and since most of the people don't know me, I can now go by either name. I admit, Francis is just a weird name to name a kid these days. And my (ex) gf doesn't like that name...I don't really like it either but I'm just used to it. Then there's Linh, which is too feminine...too similiar to the American name "Lynn." So I have a little problem at hand: either go by the odd name (Francis) or go by the girly name (Linh). Which is better?

And no, "Frank" does not appeal to me...my two choices are either Linh or Francis only.

I know a couple guys named "Lynn" although they usually go by their middle names...

You could be F. Linh which would make "Flinh" like the guy from TRON....
Or just tell people to call you Mindstorm 🙂

wheres the "go by both names" choice?
Well, when I introduce myself, I'm only going to use one name.

Can it be shortened to Frank?
See last sentence.

Or just tell people to call you Mindstorm
"Hi, my name is Josh, is this your first year?"
"Hey. Yeah, this is my first year. My name is Mindstorm."
"Huh?"
"Well, I went to Anandtech Forums asking the people there for opinions on what name I should go by and one guy suggested Mindstorm. Long story..."
"You're such a geek."
"Yeah, I know."

well, as you get to know people, let them call you either one. introduce yourself with francis, because that sounds more professional, but when you are with a goup of friends... they are either gonna call you frank, or you could let them call you lynh

You'll have to come up with a better story than that 🙂
Actually, just be mysterious.
"My name is Mindstorm."
"That's a weird name...where did it come from?"
"Nowhere. My name just is Mindstorm."

People will actually buy it!

Or go by "F" or "L". I know a dude like that. When people ask if it's short for something, he just says "No, that's my name."

hey mindstorm, sig material there 😉 nudge nudge

I would go with Linh. It's unique, and who cares if it's a little feminin sounding? I'm sure you are secure enough in your manhood to get over that. All in all, no one really gives it a second thought anyway... Francis is ok too, but that doesn't exactly exude masculinity either. Either way, it's up to you to decide which YOU like better. Who cares about what other people think...no one cares what people's names are in the end. It's all about the person. (And you will get laid more if you use Linh and not Francis.)

Vietnamese? 🙂 I am too.

Do whatever you want. I go by the name I was born with. Son. Its unique and I've seen like 2-3 others my whole life. I don't give a damn what people think about it. If they don't like it, they call me Kelvrick. 🙂 Usually White Americans that have a problem calling someone their Son call me Kelvrick but they get used to it.

Vietnamese?

Haha, yeah. Some Vietnamese names have a negative connotation in English: Ho, Bich...crap, I know they're more but I can't think of any. Can you think of any others? 🙂

Franc-linh
franklin.

It's the best suggestion I've heard so far in this thread. That is a kickass name these days 'franklin', no one is named that!
