although i'd love to buy an ipod right now, don't really want to spend that much...

i can't decide whether to get a solid state or a cd based one... my primary uses will be at the gym and maybe at school while i'm studying...

so any suggestions..

Considering that ur using it at the gym or at school.... I suggest you stay away from any mp3 players that can hold more songs than ur battery life can play them.
I find that a waste of money, since you can get a player that holds less for much less.

Maybe you should look into minidisc players, only because they are smaller than cd players, hold more than cd players (less than large mp3 players), but have a much longer battery life than mp3 players.

Some of the solid state ones allow you to use memory stick or CF or SD or whatever now so you can have a small machine with no moving parts that will allow you to store unlimited amounts of mp3s since storage is so small and affordable.

Check out this Nex II CF mp3 player. This looks like a nice small solid state mp3 player that will act as a drive for files too. If you do a search, you will find other mp3 players with removeable media formats that will not consume tonnes of batteries.

i'm a fan of the Nomad IIc mp3 player, small, solid state, and can hold a buttload of MP3's (with SmartMedia expansion). the IIc comes with 64mb built in memory, and a SmartMedia expansion slot that i know for sure can take a 64mb card (total 128mb), it might be able to take more but i don't know. 128mb will allow you to store about 2 full MP3 albums @ 160kbps (CD quality).

If you are going to go the MP3-CD route, Stay away from the mojo and the rio volt SP - 90, neither is firmware upgradeable. I would advise going with the classic rio volt (now sp-100, I think) or the SP-250. IMHO (I own a classic volt and love it) if you want to go jogging or even light walking, go with a solid state player. If you are going driving or just sitting around listening, then MP3-cd is the way to go.

Good luck in your search.

If you're going to invest in any flash memory device, go with Multi Media Card. Sony's Memory Stick is expensive. Compact Flash is too big. Smart Media is on it's way out.

I just got the Dlink DMP-110 for $48.00 at Fry's last night. After the $30 MIR it will end up being $18...at that price you just can't go wrong.

I'd check out the Bantam interactive Explorer BA350 ($200). It's the best solid state mp3 player at Cnet and is an editors choice.

With the latest firmware, the Nomad IIc supports up to a 128 MB SmartMedia card, allowing for a maximum of 192 MB of memory.

I second the vote for the Nomad IIc. It's a small, very affordable (only $130), and it has decent software.

The only thing I don't like about the transition to the IIc is that they axe'd the FM radio feature that the original Nomad II had. What the hell? Oh, and if anyone knows where to buy the docking craddle for this thing, drop me an email or private message because I'd really like to know!

I suggest the Nomad II MG. It's small, looks badass, has 64 mb built in, one expansion slot, voice recorder, fm radio, many different options and stuff to get it the perfect way, comes with a cradle already with the rechargeable batteries, and has all the useful features such as repeat, shuffle, bass settings, and treble settings.
