Which motherboard vs which Processor?

I am planning to build a new computer this spring break. I have just bought the antec 830sx case. What motherboard and processor combo would you guys recomment? I am looking to buy a Athlon thunderbird. I haven't decided how what mhz i will buy it yet. But right now i'm curious on what board would be compatiable with the thunderbird best. Also right now i'm running a slot A pentiumIII 450mhz, what is the difference between a slot and socket? And What are the pros and cons of choosing between slot a or socket ?
