Trying to decide which 19" monitor to buy. Thinking about the Viewsonic PF790, GS790, or Samsung 955DF, or 900NF. Any recommendations?

Or any other recommendations?

I suggest the following from dell.

non-flat shadow mask:
LG 995E $226

flat shadow mask:
Eizo F730 $414
HITACHI CM772F $410
Nec AS95F $281
Samsung 955DF $274

flat AG:
Eizo T761 $640
Sony G420S $478
Nec FP955 $448
Samsung 900NF is out of stock

if you can wait, try to wait for next 20% or 25% off promotion.

I have a Samsung 950p that's 19" and am very pleased with it. If you're not stuck on a flat screen monitor, the 950p is a great monitor for the price. In any case, I've been quite happy with my Samsung product and I'd think that the 955DF and 900NF are also quality. I've not had any experience with Viewsonic, though.

How does the 950p compare to the 955DF and 900NF?

I've been watching Dell for the 955DF for a long time now and it's always been out of stock when I look. Now that they have it, no discount. How often do they have the % off?

Kingofcomputer,
How does the HITACHI CM772F compare to the 900NF?
Is the Nec FP955 really made by NEC?
I know nothing about Eizo or LG monitors.
I boycott Sony. :)

The 900NF is a flat aperture grille monitor, haven't seen one personally, but people say good things about them... the 955DF is an almost flat shadow mask monitor, they're very nice too, there's a bunch of them in the labs at my school... the 950p is also a shadow mask, but it does not have a flat screen, it's also gotten good reviews.

I would probably get the Samsung 900NF or 955DF if I were you...

Slickone,

Hitachi 772F is flat shadow mask tube, Samsung 900NF is flat AG tube, cannot compare.

All NEC mon is really made by NEC, but the FE, FP series use Mitsubishi Diamondtron NF tube.
Samsung 900NF also uses Diamondtron NF tube.
The price of NEC FP955 and Samsung 900NF are similar, both are their top model.

Eizo is even better than Sony in spec, but it's the most expensive, because it's made in Japan.
I don't like Sony computer stuff too, especially mon, for the price of a mid-end Sony mon, you can buy a NEC or Hitachi high-end model. also for the price of a low-end sony mon, you can buy a NEC or Hitachi mid-end model.
If you can afford, get Eizo over Sony anytime, Eizo is the real professional mon.

LG is like Samsung, produces good mon at better price than Japanese brands.
LG 995E is the best buy 19" invar shadow mask mon in the old days, Eizo's 19" invar shadow mask mon is even better but price is double.
LG has new Flatron tube mon, they claim it's real flat inside and outside while Sony's FD Trinitron and Mitsubishi's Diamondtron NF is not flat inside, just with a flat glass outside, and it doesn't have horizontal tension wire as on Trinitron and Diamondtron.

Try to see the real thing first before buying.
I see a big problem on the new flat tube mon.
I see Samsung 900NF, NEC FP955, Sony's screen border is curved at every side, cannot adjust them to be straight lines no matter how hard I tried.
However, I see the cheap KDS AV-F series (use FD Trinitron tube too) have much better straight lines border.
For flat invar shadow mask mon, such as Samsung DF series, I see the borders are not perfect straight too.
For old non-flat invar shadow mask mon, I see the borders are near perfect.

I see no reason you cannot compare the Hitachi CM772 to the 900NF

Both 19?

CM772? Flat shadow mask CRT
900NF- Flat Aperture Grill

Both are 110Khz optimized for 1600 x 1200 at 85Hz

Power consumption
CM772 ? 98 watts
900NF ? 130 watts

Horizontal dot pitch
CM772 ? 0.22
900NF - 0.25

Warranty
CM772 ? 5 years
900NF ? 3 years

CM772 is 1.7% shorter in depth and 5.1% lighter in weight

On the other hand, I actually own a ViewSonic PF790 as well as a VS P225 and a PT770. In spite of varying size, from 17" through 21" monitors used for CAD/CAM design as well as visual graphics, the PF790 outshines them all. The screen is perfectly flat edge to edge, with consistent font sizes, colors and display artifacts. Although it is not my largest monitor, it is my favorite. You simply can't go wrong buying one -- it's razor sharp at all resolutions. dlk

What's a matter with the sony g400? This has the same refresh rate's as the new g420's. I frankly don't even know what the difference between them are. I think the g400 is heaver ;)

I have never had a Samsung monitor let me down. The 950P is an especially good product for the money, but it looks like a fish bowl compared to my "flat-screen" Hitachi CM771. If you own or have owned a flat-screen monitor, you may not want to go back. Check out www.pagecomputer.com for monitors, they tend to be pretty good on price, shipping, service, and selection. Good luck.

The Samsung 900NF is a great monitor, w/ the Samsung 955DF closely nipping at its heals. Price is pretty good for the monitor you get (Sony's look sweet, but way overpriced). Not sure about any other monitors, but NEC's are nice as well. I have a AccuSync 90 which i got for $225, and it's a great deal. Great monitor, nice, bright and clear up to 1280x1024. I've seen other NEC's and they all seem pretty good as well. Either way, get the Samsung 900NF if you can, if not, the DF :)

I've always used aperature grill monitors so don't have as much experience w/ shadow mask. Does the 955DF have the detail of the 900NF?
