Which Monitor?

I currently have a ***** HP mx75 and the maximum refresh rate is 60hz... thats what im using right now and after using it for a while my eyes start to hurt, so I want to upgrade my monitor. Would you recomend a LCD or CRT for gaming and browsing the web? I was either going to get a 19" CRT or a 17" LCD for gaming and web, e-mail... I have also heard that they were going to be releasing new 10ms LCD's in ~September, should I just wait to buy one of those?

CRT > LCD for gaming because the color reproduction abilities of it are limited by your graphics card, not the monitor itself. It also has pretty much instantaneous response time so you won't see streaking like you do on many LCD's. CRT's also resize to different resolutions better than LCD's.

LCD > CRT for text viewing and 2D. Generally, LCD's are sharper than CRT's. Newer LCD's cut down on streaking by a large margin, and anything below 16ms is usually good (although beware, some monitors are rated with low response times because they measure it with different means). LCD's also save deskspace and tend to weigh a lot less. They are also sexier in design.

If you have the horsepower to run all of your games at 1280x1024 I would reccomend a 17" LCD. Remember that you will also need DoomIII and HL2 to run at this resolution. 🙂

I have a Samsung 171s w/ 25ms response time and it's great for gaming; I don't notice any ghosting. I have read a few reviews on it and they didn't notice ghosting either.

The LCDs are much better in many ways. They will pay for themselves over 5 years or so due to the lower power usage and the lower load they place on your air conditioning. I never get headaches anymore w/ my computer now that I have an LCD.

Edit: Nice 6800GT. Get an LCD w/ DVI. It will make you happy.

Yeah, I run all my games in 1280x1024... BTW which LCD would you recomend? I am looking for a good LCD at the best price and must have DVI.

if you have a fast lcd, like 16ms, then gaming is perfectly fine. you will not be able to notice any ghosting. for a 17" lcd, i'd have to recommend you the samsung lcd wtih 12ms response time. i forget wut model it is, but you can find it at newegg for $560ish, which is not bad for a really fast lcd. if you can spend $750ish, then you can get a dell 20.1inch lcd thats 16ms. its currently on sale at dell.

I would never go higher than 16ms, becouse I had a samsung 25ms LCD before and it had lots of ghosting in games like CS... So I think 16ms and 12ms is a must.

All LCDs ghost regardless of 16 or 12ms listed response time. Whether or not it will bother you is up to the individual. Some people are more sensitive that others.

I dont agree with that, how can some people see ghosting and other can't? Not sure how that would biologically work or whatever....

It's sorta like how some people can run 100m in 10 seconds while it takes others 20 seconds to do the same thing.

It's the same way with DLP projectors. Some people can see rainbow effect and but others can't or rarely see it. To small majority who can see the rainbows, it drives them crazy and they are unable to watch movies or TV on DLP projectors. Luckily I don't suffer from either effects but some people are real bothered by it.
