I have a customer that wants to take th PC I'm building for him to South Africa with him. Just wanted to know if there was a difference in telephone systems that would cause a problem with using a modem. I already have made sure of the power requirements. Any help would be appreciated.

As far as I know, there shouldnt be any problems. You will have to set the modem settings accordingly...Phone number to dial into etc., but the modem itself should be fine. I'm not positive however, so dont just take my word for it! Perhaps try contacting the vendor...

I used to live in Zimbabwe (country next to S.A), and the modem standard there was the same as the one i used here in Norway in the modem days. Apart from the power being 220 volts not 110 volts, i do not think there is any difference at all. I had several modems back then, US robotics etc etc, and the versions we had there were no different from the US versions as far as i can remember. Remember to tell the guy that he must remember to pull out the telephone line from the modem when theres lightning there, because they are extreme sometimes in S.A. I had two modems zapped in Zimbabwe. Just so you know he might as well get DSL or ISDN there instead, since it is available there too. I am moving there in August :)

As far as I know all phone lines, modems and ISPs follow the same protocols. You shouldn't have any problems.
