Which modchip do i want?

I found the Xenium Ice very easy to work with. The chip has FTP and a Hard Drive replacement app already on there. It walks you through each step of replacing your drive and clones your current one to the new harddrive (you just put it on the DVD rom cable while doing the HD upgrade wizard).

I did the no solder for my buddy. I placed a few sheets of folded paper between the DVD drive and the chip just to make sure it wouldn't move around. It hasn't given him any problem for the past 6 months.

Process:

Install chip (15 minutes)
Boot XBOX
FTP in and copy over a bios file
Select to flash new bios file and point to one on the hd
Start HD wizard to replace drive and follow instructions
Install Slayers
Done in an hour or two depending on how much you are copying from drive to drive.

Excellent, thanks for the info.... The price difference seems negligable, only $4 between the two.

umm, if you dont use xbox live, dont get the mod chip.
do a TSOP flash and change the hard drive.

What is this i see about not being able to turn off the xbox w/ a tsop flash?

TSOP requires 2 solder points.

Softmodding is also an option. Get MechAssault, the gamesave on a memory card (via Action Replay, etc.) and you can crack your box in less than 20 minutes (most of which is backing up your drive). After that, it's pretty much like you have a chip inside. You can then go about swapping drives later using any number of utilities.

I've been doing softmods the last 3 months. None of them play online.

Splinter Cell and 007: AUF also work and have exploited gamesaves available.

Wouldnt the cost of the game, the mem card, and action replay come to nearly the cost of the chip?

Not if you rent the game and buy the Action Replay at Walmart. Just return the AR later that day and get your money back.

I think I picked up MechAssault for $8 in a bargain bin somewhere.

Both ways work. I would imagine the chip might be easier for a first timer, but neither is rocket science.

Can a HD replacement be done/ w a softmod?

Not to thread jack, but...
What the max size of hard drive you can go to when you use a modchip?
Does it have to be a special hard drive or can I use one of these.
If I can use that hard drive, what chip do I want? I'm guessing I'll order whatever aphex orders.

Yes. It's not as easy as the Xenium Ice wizard, but it's certainly possible. I think you can even build it on your PC (using some files you grab off the xbox via FTP), then just replace it.

Pretty sure with the latest bioses you can use just about any IDE drive, no matter what size. There were restriction previously, but those were cracked months ago.

Ok, xecuter 2.6 modchip installed, xbox all back togeather, works great.... Now time to learn how to flash the bios 🙂

BTW, you guys were right, easy, but my eyesight sucks for the d0, i needed to use a huge magnifying glass since im so damn farsighted...
