The IS looks nice, but kind of small.

You are cramped in a 3 series at 5'8"??? What year/model were you in? I drive a 2000 323i and I am 5'10" and have no issues at all, in fact I think its very roomy. Did you sit in the backseat or what? I even think the backseat has plenty of space.

I'm 5'11" and fit fine in our old 325i. Too bad it was such a maintenance nightmare. I guess if you don't mind spending thousands of dollars on repairs each year then the BMW is probably the perfect car for you...assuming you can get past the god aweful Bangle designs.

BTW-I really needed to have the front seat all the way back to be comfortable in that car which left very little room in the back seat for passengers.

i'd go with the 325.. i haven't read about reliability on the new models or anything like that, but the last bmw that my family had, it lasted 15 years, and that's only because once my sister took it over, there was zero maintenance...

that and it's a freakin sick car.. i love bmw's

Acura TL, thats the only one on the list will fit a 6"2 guy comfortably and leave some leg room in the back seat. I'm guessing you do need the leg room in the back seat since you are getting a sedan instead of a coupe.

I was shopping for an RSX for my friend and I see alot of those (pre 2002 TL) on Acura's dealers lot. I believe I read somewhere that they(pre 2002 TL) have some transmission problem.

I find that damned near impossible to believe.

just get the one you want, test drive them and buy it....

but, i'd recommend against a lexus is250, it'll be underpowered. I wasn't even aware that the IS came with a 2.5 engine. the 3 series BMW is probably a little bit too small to be considered a true luxury sedan.

If I was buying a luxury sedan, I'd take a look at the Lexus LS300, Infinity Q45, M45, and probably not mercedes because they tend to be a bit overpriced and not very reliable. the more time the car's in the shop, the less time you have to drive it. I'm sure the Acura's great, but I've never driven any honda/acura other than the girly's civic, and that's not even remotely comparable.

Notice these cars he listed are in the 35k range. I don't think he can afford anything more. For 35k, Acura TL is a pretty darn good entry lvl luxury sedan.

check the specs for the Vortec 5300

with proper maintanance and good driving habits its very possible

I also have a tonneau cover which helps a great deal on the highway

I've a question about the avalanche . . . when you do the foldy thing do you have a full 8-foot bed or is it one of those worthless (for hardward store runs) beds that isn't a full eight feet long?

why not get a real luxury car thats a few years old. Low mileage LS430, S430's and 740il's can be had for that $30-35k

if your primary concern is saving money on gas i don't think that, with a 10 mile commute, you'd ever recoup the outlay for a new car, especially because every car you listed probably drinks premium and that truck will take sludge.

Even this Honda fanboi was about to tell you to hold out for the new IS. But when I saw your main need was comfort and that you are 6'2", the TL definately fits the bill. I could be wrong, but I believe it is the largest car and has the most legroom out of the group in the poll (maybe even more than the Avalanche!!)

..... and a 10mile commute is very bad for gas mileage. My commute is 5 miles and the mileage has dropped down to 220 miles/18 gallon (1 tank) just because the engine isn't even up to proper temp.
I still get 28mpg highway.

Im 6' and the new 3 series fit me perfectly. They are larger inside this year. About the size of the previous model 5 series inside.

you'd get that same sort of effect with a car or a truck. either way, you're not getting good mileage, but you still aren't burning that much gas in absolute terms. and since you aren't burning that much gas to begin with, the price premium might be outweighing the small benefit to mileage that one might experience by switching from a truck to a car. given a long enough period of time you might recoup the difference, but cars do break after 150,000 miles or whatever.

plus theres the cost of depreciation. the avalanche has already had it and is probably into its level-off phase, where it isnt' going down that much (especially with such a small commute, probably well under mileage), whereas a new car would have new car depreciation.

so the cost of switching might never make financial sense.

I believe the transmission problems came with 6-speed 99's and 2000-2003/4 models. People were going through like 3-4 transmissions.
