Which Linux Version ?

Pretty much anyone would work if you avoid using kde and gnome (window managers).

I usually recommend Madrake if you're new to Linux and are looking for a windows-like experience. If you're not and you have patience/time then try try out Debian. Debian has a better package management system than mandrake though, which makes it alot easier to update/install programs & stuff.

Truthfully though, all distros have their own pluses and minuses, so if you really want to you could just try a bunch of them out and then eventually pick one that meets your own needs. Personally I use Debian stable on my server and Mandrake on every other pc that I have (for now atleast).

That's pretty funny to me. If he is brand new to linux, and you're not offering any other choices, then why in the world should he start with Slackware, which is probably one of the most spartan linux distros out there that exist. Of course some people people like spartan distros, but Slackware seems to take a lot more effort to use with pretty much no positive trade-off. It doesn't do anything to make your life easier for you, it just is. IMO, I don't think that most Linux newcomers would want to use that kind of distro.

I've used Red Hat 7.2, Mandrake 8.1, Mandrake 9.1, Freesco 0.3.2 and want to try others on this old 233 I have. Cuurently have tri boot with Mandrake 9.1/Win98SE/WinXPPro

In other words you're not exactly a newcomer. Distrowatch is a great place to hunt now more distros to try.

Thanks for the link, I think i'm going to order the Linux pack (22cd's=$40) Much better than 1 Windows=$too much

I use debian and slackware. Nothing spartan about them..
dml, Vector Linux should be worth a try. Try one of their earlier releases (3.x)

You must be kidding me. Slackware is perfect for beginners! I started out with it! I think the fact that it starts out at a command line at you have to type "startx" turns people off. Give it a try though.

"The Empire Slacks Back"............ *sigh*

Okay, let me make this really simple and easy to digest. Most people who have used windows all of there life (i.e. no dos experience whatsoever) do not want to be bothered with Slackware. They want something that works and does a lot of stuff for them, so that they don't have to. Slackware is not a "desktop" linux distro and it doesn't pretend to be one. (Not that that's a bad thing of course it's just that a lot of users really don't want and shouldn't have that level of customizability.)
