Which Linux is best for a sophistocated beginner such as myself?

I want to get into linux....which to get?? I don't mind about command line crap, I am proficient in DOS, so i figure i can figure it out with time and reading. I want a distro which is fairly small, not too much bloat, you know, but not toooooo hard to install and use. btw, I'm not really sophistocated.

well, you seem like you aren't afraid to take a challenge, so id recommend SuSe linux. It's not as complex as debian or slackware, but not as newbie-ish as red hat or mandrake. Give it a go, I think you'll like it
ps: only tellah may proclaim the spoony bards around here! 🙂

Hey! That's from Final Fantasy II

Hehe.. Just got ahold of my old Super nintendo and now I"m going toplay FF2 for the first time in 5 years.

thanks i think i will try SuSe. I have heard it's good. And how did this turn into a FF2 thread?? I don't need a foolish old man to proclaim me a spoony bard!!! Stupid ass should have never used Meteo......

Mandrake and redhat are too dumbed down. Slack is the best. Debian should be ok although I have never used it personally. SuSE is supposed to be good, but I have seen some security reports on them (bugtraq anyone) and they apparently mess arounda little too much on the inside than I like.

Linux From Scratch requires that you already have one linux setup and you use that to build another distro. IMHO it's not a project for a beginner to take on. Slackware is good if you want to learn the most you can but it can turn you away if you go into slackware not willing to read and learn. If you just want to get started and learn the linux basics go for Red Hat or Suse.

Actually I think I'm going to look into starting my own distro . . .

Would you guys recommend buying the box set for SuSe Linux? I've been using Redhat Linux 6.2 for awhile and now I want to try out some other distros, the only thing is I couldn't find any FTP site having an ISO available for SuSe. 😀

Ok, at start LInux From Scratch ( LFS )can be a litle scary, but after reading
the book and reading around its not that difficult...

As installation is concern, I just installed a minimal installation from
RH6.2 in a 500MB partition and installed ( compiled!! ) LFS from there and
believe me no more bloat....only what I want is running...I control
everything because I know where everything is....
