Which Linux do you like?

Ok, I'm gonna go crazy with all the different types of Linux companies out there. I just installed SUSE Linux and thought it was rather fun to play around with. For someone who just wants to play around with Linux which one would be best for me?

I've heard Red Hat as being a sort of cross between Linux and Windows, just wondering if there's anything else.

Thanks

I found Caldera's OpenLinux pretty easy to use. Unlike RedHat, Caldera uses the KDE GUI instead of GNOME. However it would be in your best interest to buy a book about a linux distro you like, so you can have a reference on hand if you need it. Most also come with a CD with that Linux distro and some include extra apps aswell.

I've used Slackware and just recently (today) installed SuSE 7.0. I'd say that for minimal installations or for applications where Linux was needed and utmost stability was required, then my choice would be Slackware. But for a very good desktop distro, I'm really starting to like SuSE, even though it is way different to administer than Slackware.

i use mandrake right now, i like...i hear debian ownz, freeBSD is awesome as well i think

I recently switched from RH/Mandrake distros to Debian and I'm not gonna look back. Maintenance is so much easier: apt-get update, apt-get upgrade. Done. Very nice. I know RH has up2date and Mandrake has something as well, but I've never found them as easy or as reliable.

I've been switching off between MD 6.0 and 7.2.
Today my set of Debian 2.2r2 CD's get here and I get Slack 7.1 this weekend.
If I don't have to pull teeth to get either of those installed and configured, I'm done with the RH/MD side of Linux. MD 7.2 was a huge disappointment, they took a step back with that one IMHO.
It's Debian/Slack and Blackbox for me from now on.

I started out with Mandrake holding my hand along the way, and now I'm using SuSE 🙂 I love it. Long live Linux!

Well,

I used to use and like RedHat... is a good general propouse distro...for begginers you can't
fail with Mandrake or Suse ( Never used this one execept for the eval version !? ). Slackware
and Debian are for the purists....

But my new loved distro is my own LinuxFromScratch installation ( Linuxfromscratch )... if learn alot while setting up my own system with
this...

So now I have a source compiled distro...with kernel 2.2.18, xfree4.02, IceWm and other
goodies... Haven't installed neither gnome or kde because I haven't had the time to compile
those big things....

So if have been using a "commercial" distro for a while give LFS a try, will be surprised.....

I have two older machines (pentium 166s), one which runs Linux Mandrake 7.2, and the other RedHat 7. I would have to say that you can't go wrong with either of the two I've mentioned. But there are a lot of other choices, Corel, SUSE, etc....

hmm... i'm going to be installing linux for my first time and have to be able to get it for free over the net. Should i go with redhat 7.1 or is there something better out there for beginners.. i read that redhat is a cross between linux and windows... shrug i've never even seen a linux computer but i'm interested in it for a new type of OS. Here are my system specs maybe someone could recommend one that will install the easiest.

Classic Athlon 700@800
128 generic ram
voodoo5
sb live
dlink net card

Unless it came out in the last week and I didn't hear about it, there is no redhat 7.1, 7.0 is current. I wouldn't call any linux install a cross between windows and linux, they are different and there is no way to deny that. I also think that slackware is too "hardcore" for a windows user coming over. Try SuSE, or Mandrake 🙂

i just installed Mandrake 7.2 a few days ago, and it goes SOO slow on a p-166 system. It is the GUI that is really slow and annoying.

Just tried out Peanut Linux, and that is pretty neat. Going to try out RedHat today or tomorrow

Actually there is a Red Hat 7.1 Beta out there, if you can get access to it. I am not sure what kind of hoops you have to jump through to get it, as I was able to download it at work (sometimes it is nice to work for a giant computer company!) the 7.1 beta is very cool. Fixes all of the bugs in 7.0, comes with the new 2.4 kernel, the latest KDE realease (as well as the old Gnome standby), and lots of other toys. I am running it, and I love it. Hopefully, it will reach general availability soon.

I have also run mandrake 7.2, and it is very capable in guiding a newbie through the setup. Found and properly configured all of my hardware, except for the yamaha sound card, despite the fact that it allegedly comes with the ALSA drivers (I had the same experience with SuSe). Also worked wonderfully with my GeForce 2MX card, without requiring any XFree86 downloads/upgrades, or other driver upgrades (same for the new red hat beta)

SuSe wouldn't work with my video card (other than with a generic vga x server) and wouldn't work with my sound either. I gave up on it

I started with red Hat 6.1, so I am kind of partial to the Red Hat products. However, IMHO, red hat does the best at letting you use either Gnome or KDE. Gnome in Mandrake didn't look as slick, and didn't come with as many gnome apps.

I would vote for the latest Red Hat

I like RedHat 6.2
RedHat 7.0 completly sux
Mandrake is gay
Corel SUCKS

I am about to install FreeBSD
i'll get back to you when i do that

I installed Mandrake Linux 7.2 and it was soooo easy, I couldn't believe it.
The KDE 2 GUI is a little slow at times on my machine, but other than that it's pretty fun.
