Asus A8N-VM has the Geforce 6100 GPU and the nForce 410 southbridge. So are you sure it's the motherboard you mean?
But anyway it's shouldn't matter much which distro you choose. There are differences in how they detect hardware but if a piece of hardware works in Linux it works on every distro.
A good way to test if your hardware is supported under Linux is to use a live-CD like Ubuntu.
Did you install any special VIA drivers for video or sound? I also ran ubuntu 6.10 live and had problems with native linux sound and video. I noticed there are a few linux drivers on the ASUS website - will they work on ubuntu or SUSE ??
I installed SAM Linux 2007 (must be same as PCLinuxOS2007) and installer detected everything including wireless (as in my sig). I know that it all depends on the hardware. Best of luck!
It seems that the motherboard has the same audio chip as my motherboard. It should work with the snd-hda-intel driver.
Also newer versions of X.org come with the "via" driver, you might want to try that.
What problems did you have with audio and video exactly? Did they work at all or was video just slow?
