I'm wanting to run a linux distro on my dell smartstep 250N for wardriving and the such but i'm also looking to step away from Windows as well. I'm intermediate to advanced with windows OS.

What do you guys recommend and WHY? Where can I find it if it's free to D/L?

Try Ubuntu. Provides a nice, clean GNOME interface and doesn't install anything overwhelming. Installing things are a snap with apt-get and its frontend client.

If you plan on using it for wardriving, make sure you have a wifi card that will actually work well with Linux before proceeding any further.

Thanks guys I'm over on Ubuntu's forums seeing if my wifi will work/be supported under that distro. I'm looking to move totally away from the windows platform. What is recommended for DVD copies under linux? I used dvd shrink with windows.....
