Which LG Phone?

I've posted about issues with my S5 in a couple threads, and talked about getting an lg. I'm almost ready to just buy one, and use it as a toy if nothing else. Which one do I want? Price isn't a big factor, but cheaper is better than more expensive. I'm completely happy with the performance of my S5, and I'd consider that the benchmark. IOW, I'd like something that equals the S5, and if it's slightly better for not much of a price increase, that's fine. I'll be buying used of course. I'm kind of leaning towards the G3 on Swappa, ~$100

The G3 feels a bit too old at this point -- I'd see if you can get a good deal on a G4. Not that the G3 was terrible, just that it was obviously a first-generation Quad HD phone in terms of visual quality and performance. The G4 strikes a good balance between cost and covering the bases well.

If I were buying an LG phone right now, I'd pre-order a G6... but I know why you'd object to that.

Thanks. Looks like the G4 is about $30 more. Reading between the lines, reviews of the G4 are a little muted. Sounds like it's about as good as the G3 with some small improvements. I guess that should be taken in context of a new flagship, not a $30 price bump which makes it more attractive. Course, you can keep adding $30 for improvements, til you get to a new phone :^D

It's not even the money really. I'd pay $1k+ for a phone that did what I want, but after a certain level of performance(S5), I don't really care, and I'd pay almost nothing for any Galaxy after the S5.

I found a broken S7 on the road. Wouldn't work, and even the sdcard was shot. For kicks I looked into taking it apart. It's not worth my time to try. It gets a 3/10 for repairability, and is a real pita to even access if you aren't so concerned about inflicting damage. That's worthless to me.

I'm not really following your qualifications for what you're looking for here. Some reason you're specifically looking for just the LG phones? I think objectively the S7 is probably the best of the Galaxy and G series, and then I'd say the LG V20 (but don't know if it has any issues, the G4 and G5 both had boot loop issues and some people had that on the V10 too).

The G6 looks decent (but nothing special), and the GS8 sounds like it'd be worth getting and shouldn't be too far off.

Actually sounds like you might be just as well served with something like the OnePlus or some of the mid-range phones too.

The G4 was a nice phone crippled by a reputation for the bootloop defect. I'd pay about $150 for one that was fixed by LG or could be guaranteed to be free of the bootloop issue.

If I were buying a new LG Flagship right now, this second, immediately, I'd buy a V20. It's a great device. If I could afford to wait, I'd get the G6.

Galaxy S7 is a better device, IMO, now that all carrier variants have 7.0.

I think that you should look at Motorola's unlocked G series. G4 was a great midrange device, and G5 is going to continue that trend. You know, as long as you don't need NFC. But they have big 1080p screens, fingerprint scanners and run stock Android if that's important to you.

I'm not interested in flagships. My S5 is sufficient, and superior to any Galaxy made since. A phone must have a removeable battery, removeable storage, and I can't believe it has to be specified, but it needs a headphone jack. It shouldn't be made out of glass, and I don't use biometrics of any kind. The camera should be decent. I like my S5's camera, so it should be as good as that, and it doesn't have to be better. Oh, and it's also for Sprint. Sprint works ok around here, and I don't pay for it, so it's great :^D

So... That leaves me with an older phone cause it's stupid to unnecessarily spend money, and a lg cause it's probably best for the task. I could get another S5, but that's not much fun, and I'd like to try something different. My daughter's gotten a couple lg stylos, and I've been impressed with them for budget phones. I think a lg would be a good fit.

Does the G3 avoid the bootloop issue? That would push me towards the older phone buying used.

I have the LG G4, it had the bootloop issue, but they fixed it for free. I replaced that with the LG V20 so my LG G4 just sits here on a desk, but it is a good phone with a decent camera and removable battery/sd card etc. I mainly keep it around as a spare, my wife likes to drop or lose her phones, and it's good to have an extra to pop a sim card in while we decide what to get next.
The LG G6 doesn't look appealing to me, but if you could find a good used V10 or G4 I'd say go for it.

We'll have to agree to disagree on this one. The Galaxy S7 Edge is light years ahead in capabilities and performance than the S5. The S5 has a removable battery. I'm over that, really.

OK then. I'll ship you an LG Tribute. It meets all your requirements.

I'm not opposed to a Tribute, but it doesn't meet the minimum specs of the S5 :^P

I forgot, I guess I also want something >kitkat. I'd like to tryout termux on my phone, and haven't wanted to reset everything up, and retain root. It supports lollipop+. Fixing my phone may require a new rom. That's why I was thinking ~$100 would be good insurance. I could have that ready to go in case things go tits up with my S5.

The Tribute I have runs 6.0.1. It's a prepaid Boost phone, which uses Sprints network, but I have no idea if it'll work with a Sprint SIM. It cost me ~$40, I think.

You could always put Lineage OS on your S5. I'm fairly certain there's an up to date build for it, which should be 7.0.

I've got an S7E. Its great, one of the best phones I've owned.

lxskllr would hate it. Its not what he wants out of a phone.

Just put in an order for a G3. I cracked my screen this morning. It still works, but it's time to move. There's too many problems with the G4 to take a gamble, especially since it's only an incremental upgrade from the G3. I guess I'll see in a week.

Alrighty, three's a charm. First g3 came with a blown speaker. Second g3 was boost mobile, and sprint woudn't activate it. Typing on #3 now, and everything seems right. I already got a refund on phone #1, but I still have the boost phone. Think it's worth keeping for spare parts @ $115? I should be able to use everything but the mb to keep this phone going.

I used boost as a fill in while waiting for my primary phone, and I'll probably keep the service going as a spare. I could use #2 for that, but I really got attached to the cheapo kyocera I used as a temp. It's great little phone at a great little price, and I'd just as soon use that as a secondary phone.

Any opinions on keeping g3 #2?

$115 seems a bit steep for a spare LCD and battery.
That's kind of what I'm thinking, but I don't like making two returns in a row to the same company. It also works, which is a plus, but not being able to use the mb reduces the parts value. I've got til the 20th I think. I read around on common failures, and see if the parts I'll have will cover it.

If you're content keeping a $115 secondary phone, why didn't you just put that money towards buying a better primary phone?

My thinking on it is the g3's sufficient, and will be for the foreseeable future. Phones with removable batteries/storage are getting rare, so keeping this, or something similar going is a high priority. That said, I'm this close ( || ) to sending the phone back since I can't use the mb if this one goes bad. It's not even about the money. I'd pay $1k+ for a phone that did what I wanted. Since none of them do, I prefer something close, of sufficient power, and used so I'm not adding one more piece of crap to the planet.
