Which laptop?

I have zero experience with laptop repair, except that both my wife's and sister's dell laptops have needed repair at some point. That being said, I may as well add another data point from Consumer Reports (75000 respondents):

Brand: percentage chance of major repair
Differences of 3 points aren't meaningful (according to them).
Toshiba: 16%
Sony: 17%
Compaq: 18%
Acer: 19%
Apple: 19%
HP: 20%
Gateway: 20%
Dell: 21%
Lenovo: 21%

I'm curious from those who repair computers: do you see more repairs from entry level laptops or does that matter? I am considering buying a higher grade model HP.

Asus > Toshiba > Sony > Apple > Dell > Lenovo > Acer > Gateway > HP

Nice report. Thank you. The list fits my experience with exception for Lenovo. Also, I have only seen one small problem with a $400 Toshiba with its modem so would rank them highly but they have always felt a bit "cheap" to me.

Besides, Toshiba does not have that strong of an impression with me, since they sold our submarine screw designs to the Russians many years ago. As a former submariner, I find that difficult to accept.

Wow, man I think that was around '87 or so. I was selling Toshiba printers at the time and I had some pretty pissed off people in my store.

I received my IBM service certification in '84. That's a bit longer than 2002.

Got computer repair diploma and certs in 2002 been in electronics service my entire adult life if it's electronic I have repaired it seems there are a lot of people here that think they know way more than they actually do and can't wait to disagree even when their wrong

Is that like a GED or something?
