especially with respect to inverted "T" arrow keys and 2X3 delete,end,home etc. key array.

Or... Is a standard keyboard layout always going to be somewhat bastardised?
Or... Are they all the same anyways so it doesn't matter?

Thanks

well hands down, IBM makes the best laptop keyboards. Dell's i hear are not bad and i don't mind my Toshiba all that much either. Truthfully, each maker has bargain and top end lines as well as thin and light versus desktop replacement machines which all impact the layout and quality. The worst keyboard fault to me is the short right shift key (same size as all other keys) when touch typing this is a recipie for disaster (6 miserable months with a Sony 505) with the other faux pas being the L shaped cursor keys (up above the right arrow). Otherwise most of the other problems you get used to after a while. I was never happier typing than with the IBM thinkpad 600, the feel, layout and quality were perfection.

IBM without a doubt. I looked at some of the Sony Viao's and they looked great but I dont know how sturdy they would be. Also I didnt care for the layout of the Toshiba ones I tried and everything else seemed pretty cheapy feeling. The Fujitsu ones are nice too and I have never tried a Dell though so I cant comment on those. I just know that in the end I went with IBM

If you're really interested, and if the touch and response of the keyboard are truly important to you, the only way to know for certain is to type for a while on the keyboards of the models you're considering. I have found IBMs and Toshibas (mostly top end models of both) to have the best and most comfortable / ergonomic keyboards. I have a Dell Inspiron 7500 which has a keyboard which a lot of people like, but the reach across the front part of the case where the touchpad and buttons lie is just the right length to prevent me from wearing a wristwatch while typing on the machine. It's also a grueling position for long typing sessions, with a pressure point on the wrist coming to rest right on the edge of the front of the computer. I have to be very careful to prevent a computing session on this system from becoming a torture session. (You start feeling the pain too late.) Now I'm a guy who uses a PC frequently for 8 hour stretches without so much as a restroom break. People with smaller hands and different use patterns might just love the beast. It's a pain for me to use. It's the first (and last) notebook purchased by me sight unseen. From now on I try before I buy.

I like IBM. Solid, and responsive.

Toshibas = CHEAP CRAP
Dells = cheap keyboard, good laptop
Sony = nevermind

<< Toshibas = CHEAP CRAP >>

would you care to back that up?
I have toshiba laptop and it's one of the best laptop I've ever own.
In term for keyboard, I admit IBM got the best keyboard inovation and layout on the market.
