Which laptop is the sturdiest?

A professor I know is looking for a laptop. The main issue is that she abuses her laptops and refuses to change her ways. She not only abuses them with software (downloading everything in the world so that she spreads viruses around the department at least once a week), but she also abuses them physically. She spills things and drops them on the floor. Of course the best solution is to ban her from using computers. But in the absence of that, which laptops can withstand physical abuse?

Speed isn't an issue (office work, chat rooms, and dozens of unintended viruses is all she will be running) - and the budget is probably just under $2000.

A shock collar, or a similar subdermal device maybe? Every time the computer gets a virus, it gives her a shock. Every time she voluntarily downloads Gator, shock. Every time water gets within 6 inches of it, shock. She will learn quickly. It's great when people get new stuff, and are told that they are mistreating it, but then they wonder why it will not work right.

Other than the notebooks the Army uses that can withstand desert climates, the Panasonic Toughbook should be able to withstand a nutty professor. ;-)

I have three Powerbooks that my dad took from work when they now longer needed the things.

I've seen toughbooks put through just about everything. My dad's a military contractor and installs them into the vehicles he builds missle system and survelience systems for (Hummers, LAV-ADS, tanks, ect). I've had my toughbooks for about two years now. Love the boogers.

How about the best afordable notebook. Those toughbooks are prohibitvely expensive. I have heard that the old white plastic ibooks are about as rugid as you can get in a comercial normal notebook.

Older IBM notebooks are rather sturdy.

And don't go looking for the new toughbooks, find one that's slightly older.

Thanks for the suggestions. Looking at the Panasonic Toughbook, I think it is out of the price range. Might as well just add the Dell "accident" warranty and save a bundle. I'll have her look at the IBM T series as well.

Well, the toughbook might be a little too heavy if you're going to be toting it everywhere. Mine, well... I keep it on my writing desk at home.
