Ya, #1 would be new and more challenging, but more stressful and a ton for me to have to learn. #2 would be pretty easy and I could probably do it with my eyes closed. So not much stress there but not much new growth other than of course keeping up with the latest version of Microsoft, Cisco, etc. standards and releases.

you old enough or close enough to retirement to want to go on cruise control already? suck it up and take on the bigger challenge. learn some new things :)

hopefully #1 is more than just getting ticket requests to carve up and provision space for projects and more hands on data migration, host configuration, replication, fiber switch management, and engineering.

#1 is actually all project and improving things. The day to day requests get handled by a third party contract. I don't know if that's good or bad. BAsically we design things and come up with the schemes, etc. and then contract other people for day to day and firefighting issues.

Sounds like #1 is a large majority.

#1 definitely gives you more upward mobility but it comes with a price: you'll just be a member of a team rather than your own one man band and you'll have to drive farther.

If you're not thinking job #1 is a long term destination for you (less than 5 years) it may be worth taking just to get great experience and (hopefully) training. From there you can leapfrog into even better positions if you like.

Job #1, and it isn't even remotely close. You will learn more marketable skills from job #1 and have far more mobility and challenges there. You might hate things like meetings, paperwork, etc, but if you ever want to move up in an organization or move to a different organization, these soft skills are vital. Don't waste time even considering job #2.

I have very little tolerance for meetings otherwise #1 sounds the most interesting of the 2.
