Which job would you take? How would you handle this situation?

So, maybe it's just me. I have been looking for something better for quite some time. I always find something I like a lot, apply, and never hear anything (not abnormal). BUT, now I've been referred by two seperate friends to their respective companies. While a formal offer hasn't been made, I should have one next week, and will know wether or not to expect one from the other place, also next week. So I'm stuck making a decision between two VERY good opportunities.

Here is the key common points on the two:

Both are IT Help Desk positions.
Both would be an excellent experience booster.
Both are excellent opportunities to learn a ton of new stuff, and have excellent career progression potential.

Now here are the differences:

Job 1:
- Is a 53 mile communte each way; approximately 1.5 hours.
- Smaller company, smaller (not as nice) office.
- Medical benefits not as good, but still decent.
+ HUGE learning potential, pretty much as soon as I started.
+ Work hard, play harder.
+ I could not ask for 2 better/cooler people to work with than the lead and manager.

Job 2:
+ Easy commute via Park & Ride
+ Larger company, good sized office, VERY nice
+ Excellent medical benefits
+ Little more $$
+ More corporate atmosphere...
- More corporate atmosphere
- While there is a lot of learning opportunity, it's further down the line (12+ months)

Heh, if i could have my way, I'd be able to choose #2, but with the people from #1 :(

My dilemma is this. I'm leaning heavily toward #2. BUT, I'm in no position to turn ANYTHING down, as both are head and shoulders BETTER than my current job. BUT, I will more than likely have a formal offer from #1 the first half of next week, and I may be looking at around 2 weeks before I have one from #2.

I want to be honest with #1, but this could backfire and there is the small possibility I could get completely screwed if I did. I also don't want to take an offer only to say otherwise 1-2 weeks later. I can probably buy 1 week of time, but that would be pushing it.....

Skoorb: I also would say Job 2. If job security is a concern, then I'd lean more towards company one IF it's doing well, because at least with my company now, we're small enough that everybody knows everybody else, and nobody gets laid off unless the company really can't pay for it. Canning somebody is more than just signing a piece of paper; it's removing somebody you know and see on a daily basis. Goodluck!

#1 needs someone asap :( So I need to be careful at how long I buy time with them.

My friend at #1 (the lead) knew I was applying at the other place. But he didn't know I interviewed there (right after my interview with them no less) and that my second interview is thursday.

Yeah, both are very secure. #1 is very much in need as they are in the thick of deployment for a 3rd office opening in October. I'd basically be the HD guy for one of the existing locations.

And firing an employee costs 2-3 times more than hiring.

53 miles is a heck of a commute for a job. thats 3 hours a day from your life that you will spend commuting.

Yes, very much so.

To clarify a little, #1 is as close to being mine as it can without actually having the formal offer. On #2, I will pretty much know based on how the 2nd interview goes on thursday.

Yesterday, I had my interviews with both, and both had called me back before I had gotten home that afternoon....

2. Three hours driving five days a week over time will be a killer.
