In order to increase my value in the industry, I am thinking about having a couple of certifications under my belt. I was thinking Java certification would be nice (or maybe .NET), but I also want to have a networking/telecom certification (CISCO maybe), to maximize my scope.

Which certifications do you think are hot these days? Is there anything else I need to know regarding certifcations? Any advice will be highly appreciated.

edit: ok, just so you know, I hold a BS degree in Computer Science and am more than halfway through the MS. Seems like recruiters these days are looking for more than that.

NEVER GET A CERTIFICATION IN PROGRAMMING. Make a portfolio of code. Show what you've coded for hobby and otherwise. But NEVER ever get a certification. Even if you think it will help, it won't. I know a few friends who run software companies (not out of their basement, real working 10-man crew style shops) who will garbage anything with a certification on it when it comes to programming.

If you want to get into coding then do some professional stuff on your own and put it together for a porfolio. Make something useful with .NET and Java (use JSP maybe and develop a scalable shopping site framework over the period of a month...make it really kickass).

If you are going for a job where you will be first and foremost a programmer they will want to see your code. Not what you "think" you can do according to some tests. Time is money and shops want to hire you Monday and have you working on their projects by Friday after familiarizing yourself with them.
