Which is your favorite Final Fantasy?

I liked 8 too. The story was intriguing and refreshing with a lot of sci-fi influence. The game play was something else though. Drawing all those magics was a pain and the worst part is you dared not using any magic because that made you weaker!

One more question for you, any of these similar to Baldurs Gate 2 or PlaneScape Torment (in terms of dialog and character interaction, I know the setting differs).

None of the FF games hold a candle to either of the games you mentioned.

As for my favorite - I think 6 barely edges out 7 for me, though both are very fun.

I have yet to complete any FF past 7 - their cinematics and inane cutscenes got way too long, and being unskippable is a freakin' sin.

FFX about made me want to break my PS2. I'm glad that one was only a rental.

You forgot the Tactics/Legends branches, and Crystal Chronicles. But they won't get many votes anyway. 😉
If I recall this correctly:
1. Final Fantasy Adventure was the first game in the World of Mana / Seiken Dentetsu series. It was never a real Final Fantasy.
2. Final Fantasy Legend and its sequels were really part of the SaGA series, not Final Fantasy.

So, leaving the Gameboy FF games off the list makes complete sense. However, given the relationship of FFT/FFTA/FFTA2 to FF12 (Ivalice Alliance!), I would put them on the list. Crystal Chronicles, I'm not so sure about - I'll pass judgment when I see Ring of Fates on the DS and Young King on the Wii. I suppose I would be inclined to add them (albeit I, too, doubt that CC is going to be anyone's favorite FF).

A much better question to ask is "what version are we talking about?" Final Fantasy on the NES was _very_ hard, and involved a lot of grinding, which reduced the fun factor. But the re-releases toned the difficulty down quite a bit, which really helped the game. The PSP version of FFT is in some ways superior to the PS1 version. The remake of FF3 on the DS is a much different game than the NES version - I would imagine the same thing would hold true for the FF4 remake, too. And if you want to get really technical, there were multiple versions of FF10 and FF12, and the latter (unreleased in the US) versions really tweaked gameplay quite a bit.

Oh, and which one do I like best? Probably the DS version of FF6. I will admit a soft spot for FF8 - I never understand the bashing it gets. And I do think FF12's combat system is the way of the future.

8. squall is THE best character...hands down. 8 had the best story, awesome graphics (for ps1), great character development and interaction...man, its so good.

9 was horribly underrated too. i loved 9. 6 was great, as well as 10. im in the middle of playing 12 and so far, its good too. takes a while to level up, but its worth it.

lmao, are you arguing a personal choice here? Just to make you feel better, I hated FF8 after playing all the available ones up to 7 and loving them. Then I continued with 9 and never hated one like I hated 8, so so boring! The main character was absolutely dull...oh god I hated him, if I saw one more response of .... .... .... I ended up getting to the very end and not even beating the game just to spite it. wah wah I went to an orphanage blah blah.

Anyway, I probably would choose 3/6, 7 was really good but I found 10 to be the best of the newer generation.

Every gamer I know has played final fantasy 7.. Is it still regarded to be the finest final fantasy game?

I enjoyed playing it on my PC through an SNES (or was it PS1?) emulator but I never beat it I only got half way. It was cool. My college roomate was a fan of rpgs he was the one telling me it was the best one..

Although to be honest I enjoyed playing Chrono Trigger and Super Mario RPG more than Final Fantasy..

6 for sure, 7 follows closely behind it though. If 7 had more characters and an option to shorten the summon casts (which got way too long), I'd probably have chosen 7 instead. For pure storyline, 7 wins, but overall I had to pick 6.

Yeah, it was great how the main villain didn't appear until about an hour before the game ended... literally, there was suddenly some "time sorceress" that you had to defeat. That was so stupid. Overall, I really didn't like FF8 as much as any of the other FF games I've played, and I've played all of the main numbered ones (except XI and X-2)

MQ was fun, but way to linear, even for an SNES era RPG. It was redundant and the plot seemed like more of an afterthought. Well-worth the $10 I paid for it back in the SNES days, but it's at the bottom of the food chain in terms of rankings.

SNES RPGs were some of the most non-linear. Play FFIII/VI sometime...you can literally do whatever you want in the second half of the game.

And how about Crono Trigger for nonlinear? You could engage the last boss whenever you want (and that would determine your ending - how much you had already done before facing Lavos).

Unfortunately Crono Cross was a blunch of BLEH

Never played XI. Is it worth the cost to play online? Is it still popular? Is there and offline mode?

It's not worth it. Its popularity has declined in the face of WOW, but it still has a large following. The game is a huge grindfest a la Lineage. The game is pretty and has some cool features, but it's almost pure work.

I suppose there were some, but I had Earthbound and Super Mario RPG in mind when talking in terms of SNES RPGs. While both games are probably in my top 20 games of all time, they are extremely linear as there are only a few things you can do out of order. Secret of Evermore is like... at the pinnacle of linear... and Mystic Quest defines linear.

As much as I love it, it's certainly not the finest. It gets a gold star next to it's name under a lot of colums such as "Most Played", "Biggest Fan Base", and "Cash Cow", but I think most of the people in this thread would have a hard time with crowning it the best of the games despite it opening the flood gate for new fans of the series.

Well - ff7 was the only one i played

it was fun while it lasted but looking back, it was a huge waste of time
