I am choosing a flat 19" CRT to buy- i'm shooting for my system to be just a hair below top of the line (cheap but sweet), so I narrowed my choices down to the following five:

Frequencies are at 1600x1200, and the price is the lowest non-refurb i found on PW

Samsung SyncMaster 955DF------------65hz .20 $273
Hitachi SuperScan 715-------------------75hz .22 $285
Viewsonic GS790-------------------------75hz .26 $294
KDS AV-195TF---------------------------85hz .24 $320
NEC FE950+-------------------------------75hz .25 $321

I've read good things about each of them, but which would you choose and why? One vote per user please.

P.S. I could only find a horizontal dot pitch for the Samsung, anyone know the diagonal?

I'd have to go with the #1 being the Viewsonic, therefore the 2nd being the Samsung.

I'm not a big fan of KDS or NEC, and Hitachi is basically the same thing as the NEC, isn't it?

One of my coworkers got a Viewsonic a couple of days ago and it's a very nice crisp picture so far. I'm trying to figure out how to get rid of her so I can have the monitor.:D

I'd go ahead and get that Hitachi...this is based off the information you provided. It seems to be the cheapest and does have respectable resolution & refresh rate...anything below 70 (arguably 75) will kill your eyes!! But then again, you'll probably be viewing at the monitor's recommended settings...check out each of the monitor's recommended settings and look at the prices again to see which you'll like most.

I've never seen the Hitachi monitors but they make damn good TVs so I would guess the monitors are similar?

Nah, they arent similar at all, NEC does sometimes use Mitsubishi tubes tho.

I'd get the KDS AV-195TF...it uses the Sony FD Trinitron Tube. Same as the IBMs (my monitor :D) and the Dells and quite a few others.

I would get the NEC FE950+.

I've seen the Samsung DF tubes, and they are nothing special, plus the refresh rate on the 19" model at 1280+ is painful. Why get a 19" monitor if you're not going to run at 1280+ ? Viewsonic and KDS purchase their tubes from Mitsubishi (Diamondtron) and Sony (Trinitron), respectively, so who knows if you are getting a "B" or "C" grade tube that couldn't go in one of their branded monitors. NEC and Mitsubishi are basically paired up (just check out their site: http://www.necmitsubishi.com) so chances are that you'll get a better looking monitor from NEC. (I also happen to like the way their monitor chassis look.)

I have an NEC FE950 and an NEC FP950, and both are excellent monitors. My FP950 is hands down the best 19" CRT I have ever seen. The FE950+ supposedly falls somewhere between the FP950 and the FE950 in terms of price / quality / features.

I've never seen the Hitachi you mentioned, although I did consider it when deciding on which 2nd monitor to purchase. I can't remember why I didn't decide to get it, but I eventually ended up with an FE950. My suggestion: If you have the money, narrow down your choice to about 2 monitors, then purchase 2-3 of each from a vendor with a good return policy. Just keep the one that looks best. :) This may not work for you, but if you really want a good monitor, it may be necessary. Before I bought my FE950, I went through three 19" CTX monitors with Trinitron tubes, and all were awful. Luckily, Onvia had free shipping / return shipping at the time.

Good luck!
