Do a video search for "gracie challenge" where masters of one art try to take on Brazilian jiu jitsu. Jiu jitsu wins every time. BJJ is actually about winning. Things like high school wrestling are about points and stuff and they have rules so their focus is totally whack.

back then yes.

now? no.

1 discipline in MMA is going to get your ass kicked. Also in a real fight BJJ has limits.

Kendo is pretty damn useless in mma if that's our metric.
Thread started off with this great response, and more followed.

This last weekend was testimony to the worth of techniques not permitted in the cage. Where the effectiveness of a simple (though inadvertent) eye poke was on display.

What MMA has done best educationally, is drive home the fact that if you cannot ground fight, you are at a serious disadvantage against an opponent that is skilled at it. But as the quote above illustrates, it should not be the sole criteria you judge a MA by. Eye pokes, fish hooks, small joint manipulation, groin strikes, and attacking the back of the head and cervical spine are illegal for good reason. Hell, even stomps, soccer kicks, and knees to the head of a downed opponent make for a drastically different fight, as we saw in the days of PRIDE.

Chinese martial arts and TKD are FAR from worthless. But, there are places where they train them so poorly, and unskillfully, that one might mistake them for such.

said can be said about BJJ and karate. I am seeing more and more BJJ training places and kids (teens) getting high level belts. Also hearing they are the new "mcdojo".

point being. Any martial art is good IF you have good teachers and work hard at it. NOT one is great for every situation.

The Octagon? That shitty movie with Chuck Norris?

The worst martial art is Wire-fu.

i don't really see them used in the octagon

That's because the guys in the octagon are brawlers... if they weren't doing this they would be bouncing thugs out of bars or being bounced out of bars themselves.

Depends on what distance they start at. What about masters of practical shooting?

Additionally many of the martial arts that have centuries of history are bound to have techniques that would be considered illegal in an MMA match due to the fact they could be dangerous or lethal when used used against vulnerable points on the body. Obviously they wouldn't be used in MMA or in a "gracie challenge"

While I'm sure that BJJ also has techniques that can be lethal. The MMA rules and the rules of the "gracie challenge" probably inhibit other martial arts more than BJJ.

In a no rules contest it would come down to the person and how well they were trained and condition more than the martial art in my opinion. No martial art would be undefeated under a no rules contest.

I took TKD while at the university. At the same time my class was being taught, there was a karate class being taught next door in the gym. We all wanted to watch our instructors spar but, they always refused. The last day of class, they finally agreed to a match. They had never sparred or even watched each other work out to the best of my knowledge. The karate instructor was a black belt 4th dan. Our Taekwondo instructor practiced traditional long style. Until I witnessed the match, I'd never seen flying kicks except in the movies and always thought they were simply special effects. Our TKD instructor mopped the floor with the karate instructor.

BJJ only wins every time in a video that was taylor made to show off the Gracies, according to most of them (The Gracies) they're invincible. Stories about Rickerson winning 300 fights by arm bar while suffering no loses is hilarious. While BJJ is a great skill set to have, the myth that it's the be all end of to winning MMA fights has long passed. Also that video's fail because the "masters" aren't exactly the masters.
