Radeon HD 4650 1GB 128-bit DDR2:

320 Stream Processing Units

GeForce GT 240 512MB 128-bit GDDR5

96 Stream Processors *WHAT?!*

Originally i thought the GeForce GT 240 was a better card since it uses GDDR5 memory, and has a higher clock speed.
But the MUCH lower Stream Processors confused me.

Which card is faster? Which is a better value?

And why does the GeForce GT 240 have lower # of Stream Processors when the specs say it should be faster than the Radeon HD 4650?

DDR2 on a 4650 = instant fail. GT240 is the much faster card.

And you can't compare AMD and Nvidia cards simply by the SP count. Totally different beasts.

GT240 is way, way faster. You can't directly compare memory type and stream processors. The GT240 GDDR5 is faster than the 4670, the big brother to the 4650, and comes close to the performance of a 5670.

They're both decent values. The 4650 is slower, but it's $30 less up front and $8 less after rebate. The rebate lag time might be a factor for you. If not, then the GT240 ends up being a better value in the long term.

The GT240 should approach being twice as fast, and will certainly be twice as fast when memory bandwidth becomes an issue. The memory bandwidth on the 4650 really, really kills its potential performance. If you are to compare both cards in terms of shader/stream processor performance, they are pretty close to the same.

Unless it is way more, I'd spend a little more and get a 5670. The power requirements for it aren't too bad, and it performs better than the GT 240 with AA enabled.

For gaming, go sell some blood plasma or something, and get something at least a little better. Used 5770s and the like are cheap, or a new 5670 :)

a 240 is like ~70% faster or something than a 4650 in most games (might be going overboard).

A 4650 has like 16 GB/s memory bandwidth. (launched Sep 10, 2008)
A 240 has like 70 GB/s memory bandwidth. (launched November 17, 2009)

the 4650 is... OLD....

How fast a GPU is... is more than just memory bandwidth.... BUT... the 240 is just a faster card (and it happends to have more mem bandwidth too).
