Which is the better system, just looking at specs?

Desktop:
ABit NF7-S v2.0
AMD Athlon XP 2600+
1 GB PC3200
120GB 7200rpm 7200.7 Seagate
GF3 Ti200 64MB

Notebook:
IBM T42
Centrino 735 1.7GHz
1GB PC2700
60GB 5400rpm Hitachi
Radeon 9600 Mobility

Anything I missed? Which system is better (nevermind one is a notebook or desktop).

I just bought the Notebook with a 2 year next business day warranty for $650 and was thinking about if it was actually better than my desktop.

I would say the laptop. The desktop is quite out of date compared with it. Admittedly it is easier to upgrade a desktop, however in this instance I see little point compared with getting a brand new system.

yeah the desktop still won't be all that great even if you upgrade it, compared to conroe prices I'd say don't bother upgrading the desktop.

the laptop is good only if you wan the mobility, otherwise don't waste your breath on it; ecause IBM's are not cheap these days.

Not terribly bad. I found one with a Fingerprint reader and 2 years of Next Business Day service for $650, so it was a good deal, I feel.

I have a T20 and worked on a T41p for a while and I must say that Thinkpads just rock. Comparing the two systems I think for general office work the desktop might "feel" slightly faster due to faster HDD and RAM, but from todays point of view they're both behind the curve. If I had to choose between the two, I would go with the Thinkpad any day. I'd probably take the desktop apart and ebay it in pieces and build a new system for the more (grafically) demanding things in life.

A 1.7Ghz Pentium M on a desktop mobo would is sweet.

for the pure case of comparison, i would go with the T42 anyday of the week. I have never had a lick of trouble with IBM T series and I interact with several daily.

Of course the desktop is easier to upgrade, although you would be buying completely new hardware anyway

Thinkpad >> all other laptops, period.

As far as processing power goes, the laptop wins. It wins for graphics too. You could make it feel snappier with a 7200rpm drive.

The most you could upgrade for significant differences on the desktop is the vidcard & ram if you need more. Upgrading an XP is pointless as they arent cheap at all.

Edit: I think the laptop was a good buy :)
