Which is the better gaming CPU?

"a dothan, will edge amd in gaming alone", that's about the best you can say it, even then thats all you have if you go P-M, that and crunching superpi all day long.

Pentium-M would make for an interesting gaming alternative if the platform actually made sense, but it doesn't. Then there's the fact that you have to overclock, which you can do with AMD as well...

"Try not to be biased..."

Give me a break 😛

Oh, and the answer is the 3700+ San Diego; I don't believe Dothan was mentioned as an option 😀

the san diego will be faster in gaming, in the long term hyperthreading my make the pentium 4 more competitive in SMP aware games.

Even funnier is the fact that it was Dothan who said that.

But in all seriousness. The 3700+ unless you want to look at other alternatives (ie the Dothan) then I would recommend the FX-57.

Not True but thanks for trying. HT is a cycle stealer and is nice for a little bit more fluid multitasking but would not make a difference in Games. Think about it this way a game sends information to be crunched would it make a difference if it was organised by the game or squeezed in by HT. HT might actually be the worse Idea for multi threaded games because the system would treat it as a second CPU and would the have a second thread dedicated to that. Since that thread wouldn't get any garanteed cycles it would slow down the game while it waits for those to get computed.

The P4 660 is overall a faster CPU, but it will fall behind slightly in games.

The comparison isn't very fair though, since the P4 660 costs over double what the A64 3700+ does 😕

Just get a Venice 3000 and OC that sucker to 2.5+ ghz. It's way more cost effective than either of the two choices you listed.

For 40-50% of the price of the dothan, the 3700+ can be had. Arguments for overclocking the dothan are moot as the 3700+ can scale higher.

No that is just not true, I have a Dothan in my laptop, and while it's nice for games it just doesn't beat the 3700+ trust me I own that at home.

Dothan is not an option, it is extremely expensive, and have to OC to keep up with the 3700+, you can OC the 3700+ as well.

maybe slightly off-topic..

are there any current games that really play better with a processor faster than a 3ghz(3000+) system ? Assuming a good video card and plenty of ram ?

What about known near future games ?

True enough.. OP, why aren't you comparing the A64 3700 to a CPU more in it's price range, like say a P4 550?

In some games yes, there is an article that Anand did a while ago that showed the performance difference between chips with the same gpu. Some games showed no difference and some showed a nice increase.

HL2 is especially cpu sensitive. I ran some benchmarks with my 3700+ at stock and at 2.85GHz and I saw a noticeable increase.

Notice I bolded the word, PLAY.

I am not talking about benchmarks.

I mean in actual gameplay, what current games are unplayable with a 3 ghz or equivalent processor ?
