I don't know but dead last is Italian, that's some nasty sh!t.

OMG. That is the first time I've ever heard anyone ever say anything bad about Italian food ever. Where have you eaten Italian please don't tell me that you think Olive Garden or some other crappy chain resturant counts as Italian.

Come to my house in NY, I gurantee I can find some Italian dish that you would absolutly love.

I have to really disagree with bolido on his choices.

I definitely do not think Chinese deserves to be in the top 3. I haven't tried French food, but question how good it is because it isn't very popular and I live in Houston, and we eat out the most according to statistics.

I have tried ALL sorts of other foods though, most exotic being Ethiopian.

I think that Thai has definitely got to be in the top 3.
Indian has got to be there too (depends on region, but NW Indian-Pakistani-Afghan Tandoori foods are awesome)
I'd probably put Italian too.

I LOVE Mexican food, but i have been biased because here in Texas we eat Tex Mex that is so full of cheese it makes you fat. For that reason alone, I have to make Mexican 4th, maybe tied with Chinese. But as far as 'orient' foods, Thai OwnZ Chinese! Anyday of the week.

you haven't had good chinese food then (there are quite a few different types, so you probably just didn't have the right one). thai is basically chinese food with less choices (lots of chinese people in thailand), and sweeter, occasionally with peanut flavoring. well at least all the popular ones are... phad thai, phad see ew, etc. so i guess if you have a heavy preference for sweet/peanut foods, then thai would naturally be ranked high. but aside from that, i don't think it should ever be in the top 3. same food (aside from sweetness/peanut), less selection, less complexity compared to chinese food. hell, you could probably find something that tastes exactly like thai in chinese cuisine... i'm sure some region puts sweets and peanuts in their food.

you could be right. but then this possibility will pretty much discredit the thread then, because that can be the case for any food then.

I do know that a chinese co-worker made food and it tasted a lot better than the stuff in the restaurant... I do like the peanuty stuff in Thai. But I think that a lot of Chinese is americanized, so that is partly the reason that I have to take it out of top 3. if someone was to make it authentic, maybe i would like it more. But if one was to take the restaurant chinese as a comparison, i wouldn't put it in top 3.

well... i think chinese food is unique in that it varies more by region (in china, not in america!) than just about any other cuisine would. well maybe american too... what with cajun, texmex, and others.

well i dunno, are there many chinese restaurants in houston? because there are chinese restaurants everywhere, but you really need a large chinese population and many many chinese restaurants before you get chinese restaurants of any decent quality. otherwise, like you said, it gets too americanized. but if you have a large chinese population, some restaurants will cater to the chinese people and thus have reasonably authentic food. i'll put it this way... if the waiter speaks decent english... it's probably not good 😛 not to mention you need a large number of them before you get any decent selection of regional styles.

and i agree, i don't really like chinese restaurant food in general, but i think i've just been spoiled by my mom 😀 i've never been to a restaurant that can compare... *sigh*

Gopunk: i'm *pretty* sure Indian food is more diverse by region. Remember, it is more of a subcontinent where people have COMPLETELY different languages (over 100), completely different religions, different races, and different cultures (it was all in their own, self enclosed kingdoms up until the 1800's, and even after). For example, in the north, they rarely ate any rice based foods. it was all wheat based. In the south it was the exact opposite. most foods are derived from rice. in the north west, they eat quite a variety of meats, made in the tandoor, which is also found in Iran. in any case, houston does have LOTS of chinese restaurants and easily a chinese population over 100k. We have several Chinese representatives in the city as well (probably one reason Yao came here, they all woo'd him 🙂). I have tried *good* chinese restaurants, but my gripe is that it all starts tasting the same. I've noticed they only serve like 3 different sauces, and then vary it up by throwing different vegetables and meats into it. otherwise, it tastes pretty much the same, except one dish will have shrimp, the other will be chicken, but the sauces will be the same. maybe i've eaten too much Chinese food that i'm bored of it. i don't know. but from the stuff I personally tried, i would put Thai over it in my opinion. Thai is probably my favorite food.
