Which is most impressive? (Sports Related)

Which is most impressive? My friend and I are actually arguing this quite a bit. Post your logic as to why one is more impressive than the others.

If you don't know hitting the cycle in baseball is hitting a single, double, triple, and home run all in one game. IT doesn't necessarily have to be in that order, though if it is I think that's a natural cycle (which is even more impressive). I think the others are pretty self explanatory.

-- I would say that of the two I'm deciding between 5 goals in one NHL game and Hitting the cycle. The cycle is amazing in that you have maybe 5 at bats in a major league game that means pretty much every at bat you gotta take advantage of it. But 5 goals in an NHL game is so much more rare and harder.

I'm still going to go with the cycle.

===edit===
I didn't come up with these, just saw it on ESPN's website. There are probably a great number of things in every sports listed above that would be more impressive (perfect game, back to back no hitter, 3 straight shutout games, etc). It's most impressive of these five options

We could create a second poll, but I think the suggestions would start to get outlandish.

5 goals in one NHL game is just nuts.

Joe Malone of the Quebec Bulldogs scored 7 against Toronto Maple Leafs back on Jan 31 1920.

Gretzky scored 5 in 1981. That is also the year he had 50 goals in 39 games. Ended up with 92 goals for the season.

All the other ones are reasonably doable.

Hole in one. Nothing compares to this feat.

Sure the argument of luck may be involved, but it's mostly skill. And the sheer awesomeness of seeing it happen is what makes it most impressive to me. It's a single awe inspiring event.

Hole in 1 is based solely on luck.

60 points in a game takes a shit load of effort. You pretty much have to be out there the full 48 min or close to it, which means you get little rest and have amazing stamina and concentration.

5 goals is pretty hard, but you do get a lot of rests w/ the line switches.

Hitting the cycle is all about luck. You can't control where the ball goes even if you're Ichiro.

60 points is my pick.

200 yards? No. Maybe 400 yards.

it also happens fairly often

5 goals in an nhl game is insane though.

How often does 'hitting the cycle' happen?

And honestly....is that really that impressive? What about getting multiple home runs in a game instead? Isn't that better?

Anyway...I'd vote NHL or the rushing one. A hole in one takes skill but also a certain level of luck. The basketball one...very impressive to be that 'on', but it also requires a certain level of "selfishness". I don't really see a problem with it, but many do. The baseball one, eh, like I said above...it might be rare, but I'm more impressed by multiple HRs.

200 is the easiest of the five. If a back breaks a quick 80 yard TD run on the first play of the game, then he essentially has the rest of the game to rack up a fairly average 120 yards. Rare, but not as rare as the others. If it was 300, I would put it into contention with the others.

If it was 300 I think it would have to be tops as no one has ever done 300 yards before (though Peterson got close at 296).

I do agree 250 is probably a better marker, but like I said, I got this from ESPN.

Hitting the cycle actually I don't think is that rare, but it's just the fact that it's not just 4 hits, it's almost every type of hit you can get as a batter.

Should be which is more impressive. Most impressive would be something like back to back no hitters (My personal favorite all time great stat) or rushing for 300 yards in a game.

Hitting for the cycle, while rare is not uncommon. I imagine at least one player does it a year. And 200 yard games are not that uncommon. As for the hole in one, yeah, I'll give that one a most impressive on the list you provided. But even that one is kinda quirky, especially when most of them come on short par 3's.

i say perfect game in baseball. i know its not an option but i think its the most impressive than hitting the cycle.

see my post above. 300 has NEVER happened before.

I would say upping it to 250 would make more sense, but lets not go crazy. We might as well add "hitting 800 career HRs" or "120 pts in a basketball game" if we change the rushing one to 300 or 400 yards.

5 goals in an NHL game, since only 55 people have done it.

59 people have scored over 60 in the NBA

276 people have hit for the cycle

33 hole-in-ones on the PGA last year alone (only 1 par 4 ace in history though, very impressive)

Not sure on the number of 200 yard games, but it doesn't seem that uncommon.

I go with 5 goals in an NHL game.

But what about the "it was a hit but we'll call it an error to protect the home team pitcher's ERA" hit? 😛

- Hole in One - Skill will get you part of the way there, but I think this is more luck. I would not assume that a player who has scored a hole in one is better than a player who had not.
- 60 or more points in an NBA game - very impressive. I would assume that a player who does this is one of the best players in the league and probably one of the best players of his era. No luck involved here.
- 5 goals in an NHL game - same as 60 points in an NBA game.
- Hitting the cycle - takes a lot of skill, and a versatile player to hit both a triple and a home run. But I don't think it's really any more impressive than 4 extra base hits of any type - luck is what makes the difference between hitting the cycle and having 4 solid hits in a game, and the impact on the outcome of the game would be not nearly as much as with the hockey and basketball examples. This one is more a peculiarity than an accomplishment.
- Rushing 200 yards in a game - takes a lot of skill and endurance, and probably an unbalanced offense. How rare is this? I don't follow football too closely.

It came down to a tie between hockey and basketball for me. I love hockey and hate basketball, so which one I voted for should be obvious. 😛

If you combine the 5 NHL goals with the MLB cycle, you get the "5-goal hat trick." From wikipedia:
"[Mario Lemieux] scored in five possible game situations in one game, on 31 December 1988 against the New Jersey Devils. He scored on a powerplay, short handed, even strength, penalty shot and an empty net goal."

That one will probably never be duplicated.

It depends : I think you can start to differentiate homerun's too, I'm sure most people would agree a grand slam is a different type of hit than a solo shot, or two/three run shot. But I don't htink people would get 7 at bats to try to get the four types of home runs they can get and the single/double/triple.

Wow. How the fuck do you figure a baseball player can't control where teh ball goes? Everything else you say the rest of your life is discredited for this retarded statement.

If you can tell me why a natural cycle is more impressive than a regular cycle, please do.

Furthermore, I think a cycle is overrated.

Which is more impressive?
1) single, double, triple HR
2) single, triple, HR, HR

And yet if you do (1), you are celebrated and your name is etched in a part of baseball history. If you do (2), all you had is a very very good offensive day.

Or what about hit by pitch? I think thats a true cycle!
