Which is more stable? 4x2GB or 2x4GB

I'm building a new SB based Windows 7 x64 system. I want to go with 8GB of RAM and assuming the same timings and spec RAM which is generally more stable and troublefree. 4 sticks of 2GB or 2 sticks of 4GB?

I'm thinking 2 sticks of 4GB since they are sold as a matched pair and perhaps there is less variation in the modules and less memory slots occupied but I have no experience to back up those assumptions.
 
2x4gb, by far.

Any time you can, you want to minimize module and chip count.

This has been my experiance as well. I always run into more stability issues with all ram slots filled than with only half when pushing the mobo overclocking. I think if not overclocking though it wont really matter much.
 
Like they said less sticks are always more stable. Of course it really only comes into play when O/Cing.
 
even when it does come into play OCing, the difference in memory capacity generally nets a higher gain to performance than the loss of cpu clocks anyway, but if you can avoid it always go for the minimum stick configuration. looking forward to moving to SB since im running 4 sticks now but i dont need more than 8GB for anything i do right now, so the added stability will be nice since it will allow me to push my OC that much higher
 
I'm having this debate now. I have 4 sticks (2GB) of patriot ram. 7-7-7-21 and I ran my I7 860 at 3.4 from the stock of 2.6. My system was rock solid. Never had a reboot or BSOD. I've sold that system and now I am about to build my Sandy 2600K and Asus P67 Pro MB. I want to overclock it to say at least 4 on air. I'm hoping the ram can take it and work as well as it did with my I7 860....
 
are you using 1R or 2R dimms? the main problem is UDIMMS put a tremendous load on the memory bus unlike RDIMMS.

iirc the x58 can run either but not mixed of course.
