I've always wondered why you can't play 3 pairs (and win that is)

Or why big bodies of water are always near a shore!

It depends on the kicker. But 4 pairs always beats 3 of a kind, but it again goes to kickers if they have 2 3's of a kind. It gets really complicated if you have a 6 card flush vs a 5 card royal flush, believe me.

Sure, two pairs of aces will beat everything but a straight flush and royal flush.Originally posted by: Perknose

3 of a kind contains 2 pairs, and if you also had a pair of something else that would be 3 pair. aka full house. it beats 3 of a kind every time.

if you wanted to be technical a 4 of kind is really 6 pairs... then again, a three of a kind is in fact 3 pairs.

He's right. Say you had the following hand:
3 3 3 J J
The first two 3's make up 1 pair, three no.2 + three no.3 makes the second pair and J J makes the third pair.
