Which is faster?

i have both of these cards and im migrating my home system to an e5200 (3.2GHz oc) from the A64 4000+ im currently using. since there were never many benchmarks released specifically for the 2900PRO, and the 1GB variant even more, im finding it nearly impossible to compare. the only thing i found which had a solid lineup was a posting on tech-forums which listed most of the major graphics cards released ever, all the way back to the voodoo1, which im not entirely sure is accurate. http://www.tech-forums.net/pc/...-card-rankings-139202/

so is there really much difference purely in graphical performance? i dont have any plans to upgrade either card anytime soon since i dont have the money for it, and power consumption isnt an issue since i have enough power supplies lying around to mix and match to whichever system the cards go into.

well the 3850 was about the same as the 2900pro and the 4670 is usually faster than the 3850 so it looks like the 4670 should be about the same as the 2900pro. also the 4670 will use half the power of the 2900pro while delivering basically that same performance.

4670 might be able to hit the average frame rates but with a 2900pro it can hit better minimum frame rates due to more bandwidth.

You should benchmark each card. I would like to see four different variations: low resolution (1024x768) with no AA, low resolution with 4xAA, high resolution (16x10) with no AA, and high resolution with 4xAA.

My guess would be that the HD4670 is going to be faster until you run into memory bandwidth problems. However, doesn't the 2900Pro have (comparatively) poor AA performance? I think it does, which makes the use of AA intriguing. But I don't really have a doubt at resolutions below 16x10 that the HD4670 will be faster, or actually be faster in the majority of circumstances.

i mostly play eq2 on my rig (hence the cpu upgrade) right now. chances are im not going to notice a big difference there one way or another. given that im not power constrained in either rig im probably going to just OC the 2900 to XT performance levels since im planning on buying fallout 3 soon as well. as soon as i get everything up and running though i will see about running some benchmarks if i have time
