Which is faster @ SETI? P4 or A64

Depends on how much $$ you want to spend for a board that can overclock and how much $$ you want to spend for RAM and overclock.


I'd say the P4, but I am sure someone with an A64 will state otherwise. I am not conviced that the AMD is cheap enough yet. Good Concept tho! Esp, if you want to run Linux. If you plan on running MS stuff I would suggest getting Intel.

Go to SetiTimer, there is currently no Athlon 64, but you can use the opteron as a reference.

P4 with HT enabled can do 2 WU's simultaneously, so I'd say it will win this one...

You should definitly buy a HT supporting PIV!!
My Athlon 64 3000+ can do a wu in just 2hrs (@2200Mhz) but a nice PIV (~2.8Ghz) can
do 2 wu's in just 3.5 hrs or faster! It's also great if you'd like to run different projects
together

Did you have any succes OC'ing your A64? I can't get it past the 221Mhz FSB... (think it's
because of the AGP/PCI bus lock) on my Abit KV8-MAX3...

Haven't attempted yet esp. with the present ram I have and yea until there's the ability to lock agp/pci bus (NForce 3 250/VIA K8T800 Pro) OC'ing is pretty limited at this time. I take it you mean other projects i.e. F@H

Yes indeed, other DC projects like F@H, DPAD, UD etc. or just 2 instances of Seti

I'm also waiting for the KT800Pro and the 3700+ I wanted to buy a 3400+ but saving the
money now for a 3700+...
I first had some el-cheapo memory to, before buying some Corsair Pro mem, and even the cheapest
mem was able to run @ 221Mhz (it's 400Mhz DDR running @ 442Mhz) perfectly! Never had any problems.
So the 3000+ is now running at 3400+ speeds, only missing the 512Kb cache. I really noticed a difference
in benchmarks while OC'ing..

doubt that extra 512 KB of cache does much anyways.

I'll probably upgrade every 1000 PR or 1 GHz at best. That way there's a noticeable performance increase each CPU upgrade I take.

lol you wait. Even if it takes 5-10 years, that is soon going to sound like a really silly thing to say. Sure it may be relevant today (to those who can afford to buy a new comp every 1GHz) but imagine if someone heard that a few years ago, someone chugging along with a Pentium 60MHz? Equally the opposite end of the scale, a few years from now, 1GHz increments would be like the "tiny" 100MHz increments between CPUs today. Of course the focus probably won't be on MHz anymore, but I'm sure when computers mature with newer technology you'll remember passing comments like this, look back, and laugh.

A64 is of course faster, especially then looking on cpu-speed, but P4 due to HT can crunch more wu/day. :beer:

BTW, BOINC-taskbase got a new M3 with cross-project-id, so most likely then this is implemented you'll also get cross-project-credits.

I'd definitely go with the P4 HT if you are going to run SETI. My A64 (3200@2.2) averages 1 wu in about 1:45-1:55. My 2.6C@3.25 averages 2 wus in about 3:30. It's pretty close, but the P4 definitely crunches a little faster.

What's your memory situation on that p4 zodder? My 2.8@3.15 has averaged 2:50 over the last couple of months, memory is 1:1, 2.5,3,3,6

I have 2 x 256MB Geil PC4000 running 2.5-4-4-8. I wonder if tightening those latencies down and running 5:4 would help lower times?

Funny that I'm getting better times, latency doesn't seem like that big a deal in the face of losing bandwidth by going with a ratio. Before I cranked it this high I had lower latencies but higher times. Can't hurt to try though . Maybe I've just had an incredible streak of high ARs and/or those nice units that crap out after a few minutes.
