Just wondering, I am thinking of playing with FreeBSD instead of linux, and I was curious if there were any performance perks for SETI. :D

Unfortunately, none of the *nix clients were as optimized as the windoze one. Alot of that has to do with using the gcc compiler as opposed to the Intel compiler used for the CLI (there wasn't an Intel compiler for *nix then). I understand there is now an Intel *nix compiler available, but I doubt that the SETI head-honchos would endorse recompiling all of the *nix clients to take advantage of this...

Thats just one reason the seti client should be open sourced ;)

On a side note, FreeBSD and Linux's performance on decent non-smp or 2 processor machines is pretty close for many tasks. Im seeing a few reports that FreeBSD is doing much better in the networking dept though, even against a 2.4 kernel.
