Which is better?

Is it best to just turn the monitor off or just set windows to shut the video power to it down after a few mins? Which uses less power and will this stress the video card out any?

^Sniper^, I leave my monitor on almost all the time, I have the screen saver set to a blank black screen, SETI@Home to be specific. I use the old reasoning that you put more stress on your PC when you turn it on and off than leaving it running all the time. Just my opinion, hope it helps.

I mean putting the monitor in standby mode not the system. I leave my system running all day but shutdown at night. But I am off and on my PC all day to and was wondering which is best to do turn the monitor off,set a screen saver or just have windows more less turn the video card off(cutting the signal to the monitor) untill the mouse is moved.

I just turn my monitor off. Then again I have a POS monitor and shortening its lifespan is not really something I'm concerned about 🙂

yea, that's what i do too. it's annoying sometimes.

When your monitor goes amber into "power saving mode" it supposedly only uses like 5-15watts so it's not much, but I would rather turn my monitor off after a certain time if I know I'm not going to use it for awhile.

I don't like having the screen saver working cause I've had it interrupt a burn or something and make a coaster(on an older machine). Now at work, I don't have much for security features on my Win95 box so I just leave the screen saver to do the job for me. They can still get at my data, but they have to reboot first and login 🙂

i generall set it to power saving mode if i know i will return to use the pc in less than an hour...longer than that and i turn the monitor off manually. i dont think i'll be removing that much life from it...not that i would keep the monitor long enough to even notice the difference.

ha?...that's for mechanical parts, generally...i.e. an hdd, NOT your monitor, which works completely differently.

turn it off when u're not using it for extended periods...save power, save your monitor....

pretty much the same for me.. if i am leaving for an extended period of time, i shut it off via power switch.
