Rent - that way if there is a problem it's their problem. Also the models they rent are tested with their system and they know how to support them. I'm sure plenty disagree but those are the overwhelming reasons to rent and not buy.

I was thinking along the same lines as you spidey. If anything goes wrong they will replace for free and usually have a good database of known issues if there happens to be any. I just didn't know if I would get a better quality or model if I purchased my own.

Not only that but many are upgrading to DOCSIS 3.0 so they'll replace your modem with one they know works with their system. No trouble to you and you can be assured you're getting the best performance possible.

Ya spidey that's where this question originated from. I wasn't sure if I should rent their modem or buy my own docsis 3 modem. There's really only 2 that I see out there worthwhile the motorola one and the cisco one and I can't seem to find a place to buy the cisco so they said they usually use motorola modems anyways.

I don't even know if my ISP (TWC) will let me use a 3rd party modem. They've never asked if I needed a modem or had one, it just comes with the service. There are no equipment fees listed on my bill regarding Internet access either so I would assume I'm not paying for it directly as well.

For mine they don't charge the rental fee for the modem but do charge for the telephone modem I have.
