Ok, it's been a while since I've been in the DVD conversion game. Which is better nowadays, xvid or divx?

I don't know, but I'd imagine it depends on what you are looking for. Unless one is better for both size and quality.

Meh. I'd like to go with Xvid because it's open source. But is there a big reason I should go with Divx?

they are practically identical in output in my experience. I must've encoded about 50-100 files using either of those encoders in the last 2 months and the results are the same... output time and quality.

I stick with divx because the decoder is more widely used though.

I typically use DivX 5.12, seems to encode the fastest for me. Though, its been a while since I encoded something with XviD, I should give it a test run with one of my DVDs.
