Which is better? GF4MX (onboard) or 9700 pro?

My son's computer has the onboard video chip by nvidia. I think it's called GeForce4 MX (but I'm not sure). It uses system RAM for video RAM.

Is an ATI 9700 pro an upgrade? I believe the 9700 pro is older than the motherboard (which isn't new). The CPU is a Athlon XP 2200+.

That 9700 pro will smoke the onboard GF4 MX. There is no comparison. Plus, you'll free up your system RAM.

9700pro is head and shoulders above a GeForce4 mx. That said, if you are forking over money for a better video card, you might want to consider some newer cards since the 9700pro is two gen. behind now. It will run today's games fine, but I don't know about next gen games. Depends on cost/benefit for you. Anyways to answer your question the 9700pro is a much better card and can run most of today's games perfectly fine. With your cpu, a faster video card (than the 9700pro) might be cpu limited as well depending on your resolution.

Yes, thanks for the answers guys. I wanted to upgrade my 9700 pro and pass it on to my son... but not if there was no point. I'll be putting in a 6600 GT and giving the 9700 pro to my son.

id of said, head, shoulders, torso, and lower limbs above the MX,

the GF4 MX is a turbo etch-a-sketch

Holy christ! You boys were not joking. The 9700pro was a huge improvement over the onboard video. How can they call that onboard video a GeForce? It was like that fellow said above: a turbo etch-a-sketch.

I didn't realize how bad my boy's computer was suffering with that onboard crap, though I should have known better. No wonder all he would play was Starcraft and Diablo II. Everything else newer ran like a slideshow or with no effects enabled.

I did that same jump about a year and a half ago...one heck of an improvement, huh? Unfortunately, the 9700 Pro is starting to show its age too. I'm going for the highest R520 series chip for AGP when it comes out so that I won't have to upgrade again later.
