For math and science classes a laptop is useless.

I think a laptop can be good for other classes though. Especially if the teacher strictly follows their power point. Then you can copy/paste their powerpoint outline, types your notes int he right place, and get a nice set of structured notes.

I was in a class once where the lady in front of me was using her laptop to check her ebay auctions during the entire lecture and IMing her friends.

In one of my freshman classes, somebody would bring a wireless router and a group of people in the room would play starcraft.

Definitely pen and paper. I'd never actually listen if I had a computer in front of me. Besides, a recent study said doodling improves memory.
