Which is better for seti crunching?

Via133a
100mhz fsb, 133mhz mem bus
or
Celeron 300a@450mhz
Intel BX
100mhz fsb, mem bus

I've heard the Bx chipset is better, because seti is very memory dependent and memory latency really impacts it alot. But I was wondering if running the Via133a @ 133mhz mem bus would be better than a Bx on 100mhz bus.

Well right now the via133A will be better but hopefully the v3 clients will be out soon and then it won't matter so much if the current crop of "benchmarks" are correct! Still since it's a celeron you'll probably get a little better performance with the via since 133 mhz is helping out that tiny 128 kb cache...

Wish I could. I've got an old Celeron 300a and a few other spare parts lying around and was thinking of building a second rig to run seti on but don't know which setup would perform better.

Keep in mind tho' I only expressed the status as is with a celery at 100MHz and mem at 133 (preferable cas2!!!!) I could be wrong but every test I've done or seen indicates that via 133A with memory at 133 has better performance than bx at 100 but bx at 133 is another story... not that that's relevant with a celery anyway good luck!

Realistically, the BX at 100MHz is faster than the VIA running both core and memory at the same speed. The extra +33MHz for the memory is only a small percentage increase in performance and should bring it to the same through-put levels as the BX, maybe a little higher, but not much more.

What is more interesting is how much will the DDR DRAM (when it comes about) increase performance. Also, how much will it cost?

Edit: BTW, to answer the question, the VIA with memory at 133MHz should technically be faster as the SETI clients, like most others, need some memory and would benefit from faster speeds. Although, I think you will find both systems performing very closely.

My info tells me that the bx is the better chip set. At over clocked speeds I don't know which is better.

seti can still swamp the fsb of the celery pretty easily, so the extra 33mhz of the via won't help fill the fsb. though it will let other things have some memory bandwidth such as anything on the pci bus.
