which is better for gaming-- Win98SE or ME?

<< Just stay away from ME. >>

Yeah that pretty much says it all. While Microsoft will defend ME saying its the best the 9x kernel has to offer, for the most part it isn't true. WinME is basically windows 98 Third Edition. Microsoft included a bunch of..ahem "features" into ME that actually made it more buggy, unstable, and sluggish. My experience with ME is that it is an OS that can never be trusted, I would never, ever do productive work on an ME, for constant fear of crashes. Win98SE, IMO, is easier to get running clean and smooth, and most importantly, stable. The drivers for devices are the same for 9x/ME so you don't have to worry about hardware missing out on hardware, at least not for another year or so.

If you can't tell already my advice is to just stick with whatcha got. And if it's been a while since your last re-install, I would say go ahead. A fresh windows install is a happy windows install.

Hope that helps.

OOBradm, I'll most likely get flamed for this, but I've been running WinME since it came out and personally find it more stable than Win98. If you have both, why not partition your HD or add a second HD and test your games on both and decide for yourself. Hope this helps.

I think WinME works fine too, i had it for quite a while before going to XP and it ran well, no better and no worse than 98 in my opinion.

<< I'd go for Win98SE. >>

me too, if those were to only options, i actually find that games run better in win2k cuz of better memory management. 🙂

<< I didn't know that me was good for anything, muchless gaming. >>

Win98 sucks, but ME sucks alot more.

I'd rather go back to Win3.x rather than having to stand ME ever again.

But really, why not go 2K or XP?
Both are supperior in just about every way.

I just installed windows ME after using 98 1st Ed. for a long time and started getting incessant, completely random hard drive accessing, particularly during game applications. I'm probably gonna reinstall 98 over the weekend.

i would go with xp, but I dont have the money right now. It seems like your all saying 98se is the way to go, so thanks for your help🙂

Agreed that Win2k is the better choice for OS' Microsoft has to offer the home user. But seem as your question was between Win98SE and Win ME, I would have to say Win98SE would be the better choice. Not by as far as some people are stating though. I have always found both to be quite a head ache really.

Windows 98SE by far. IMHO ME sucks and I think MS just wants it to go away, as do I.

I am waiting for my games to come out able to work on XP then I will be happy or better yet LINUX.

I used to use Windows 98SE for like 3 yrs, until about 5 months ago when I started alternating between 98se and xp pro. I made the switch to stick with xp pro in january because i built a new system. All my games run perfect, you just need to use the nvidia refresh fix if you use an Nvidia card with winXP. I still like the quickness of 98SE though, every once in a while I think about going back.

<< you just need to use the nvidia refresh fix if you use an Nvidia card with winXP >>

what are you talking about? please explain.. im running winxp and im just curious..

i read somewhere microsoft only realeased ME to gather up some money for the XP advertisement campagne, dunno whether that's true or not.

i'd stick with 98se

Kendogg........

For Windows 2000 and XP, the system has a default refresh setting of 60hz. This doesnt affect you if you disable Vsync in games, but I leave it enabled so theres no way to change the refresh rate higher. That means that I max out at 60fps which isnt too good for my fast system. The Nvidia refresh rate fix utility enables me to set my refresh rates to my monitors highest possible setting @ that resolution. Ex. In unreal tournament, I run my game @ 1024x768 @ 100hz with the utility. my fps stays at a constant 100fps. Without the utility my FPS would be 60 no matter what resolution.
