Which is better for gaming for me DSL or Cable?

Well I live in a pretty small town and I have to option of either cable or dsl. Which would get me the faster pings? If its a small difference should I go with the place with the better deal?

Thanks,
Rob

get cable. its generally faster then dsl. in my area, i get double the bandwidth using cable then dsl and its cheaper also.

All depends on the routing out to the rest of the internet.

Probably try the cable first, as DSL usually requires a contract.

This is a can of worms really. Some say cable is faster, some say DSL. Quite a bit of factors can play into this. You'll really never quite know unless you try both services.

As for pings, you'll generally want to look and play on servers that are closest to you. I find that is a bigger part in it than what service you have.

DSL is usually cheaper. If you can afford Cable, go with it. Cable is faster and I prefer it instead of Dsl cuz the phone lines piss me off. Cable is easier 😛. Cable is faster. Comcast = 3 MB, Verizon = 768K. But you won't even use the 3 MB unless you're downloading like 20 things off high speed servers. There really is no difference while your browsing, So if u can afford cable, go with it.

Check your area, every area is different. I prob beat 99% of the cable connections out there with my DSL. I get 6MB/608 for $45. Some people say cable is faster like above.... but that's false. Every area is different, and most areas now offer 3MB DSL which is just as fast as cable, and it's usually cheaper.

Pings are usually similar, tho typically for me DSL pings have been slightly lower (10-20ms faster).

I say go with whoever has it cheaper for the speed you want.

in my area, cable stomps all over DSL as far as price/performance. DSL is crap d00d, unless you're like the 20% who are actually within 1/2 mile from the central office. cable is muuuch friendlier as far as distances from the CO (or node as the cable world refers to it) 🙂

I think it depends on a lot of factors.
Where i live, cable is faster, but DSL gives far better pings.

I would say cable first... then DSL - I currently have DSL as its been the most reliable... when I had cable it would fall out of synch way too much for my tastes (specially in MMORPGs) - but when I go to download something I sure do miss the speed.

Its totally dependant on your cable segment + DSL virtual paths. If either one of those is contended badly, it can play havoc with your connection's performance. If both are good, cable is my preference, TDMA over DOCSIS is much more bursty than PPPoATM for ADSL.

It varies very widely with the region you are in.

Here the options are Adelphia powerlink which drops connections at random 6 or 7 times a day, but is faster than the local DSL from verizon, that doesnt crap out.

I just got an email from cox that they raise my download up to 4Mbps and upload at up to 512Kbps at no additional cost. Im in AZ and I pay 39.99 a month! Cant complain about that!

It really depends one what companies you are dealing with. I have Verizon DSL which has great pings. I am ussually 25-30 ms for eas coast servers which is pretty good. I have had Charter cable too which I ussually got 60ms pings and also got dropped alot.... With DSL I have only had an outage once and it was only for about an hour compared for weekely outages with my cable co.

Again It may sound like im pimp DSL but the real factors are the companies which will provide for you. Verizon DSL has been great for me while Charter and Adelphia cable both have sucked. But some cable ISP's are ussualy pretty darn good. On the global market DSL spanks cable but in the US for some reason its swapped.

Also my DSL is 1.5/384 for 29.95 a mo. Soon VZ is upgrading to 3mbit/768k Not sure if prices are going to increase for it or not as its not available yet. Most think it wll be a free upgrade though.

I'd go with cable in rural/suburb areas, and DSL if you live in a city.

I live within a half-mile from central office, though. And cable practically crawls here, because there are a crapload of people using the pipes.

I am thinking of switching to DSL from Cable, Charter 3/256 to Bell South 3/384. The price is almost exactly the same, but Charter has given me hideous service. I have had an army of people come to my house to try and fix mysterious drops in services that can last anywhere from 30 minutes to a few days. The problems are still not fixed and I rely on the internet for class information and homework, and don't like the fact that if it dies I have to drive to school and use the library computers. Anyone have any experience with Bell South DSL? The Answers package makes it pretty sweet, bundling in Phone service along with Direct TV. Before Charter though I had Comcast for cable and didn't have too many issues, it was actually pretty flawless.

if you can get sdsl it will be better for gaming than cable because of the lower latency and higer uplink speed. i had a 1.5Mb sdsl a couple of years back and it was 1.5 both up and down. granted it cost me something like $65/mo but i didnt really mind. again it all depends on where you live like the previous posters noted, if you can only get adsl then go with cable.
