which is better for extended photo expeditions:

im going to be going on a trip for a month or two and i wont be able to download pictures onto a computer.

do you think its safer to go with two 512mb SD cards instead of one 1 gig card. i mean, is there a realistic chance of a card failing? it seems to me that there is a good chance that during the two months, one of the cards could get corrupted.

id obviously rather just lose half my pics than all of them. i know two 512mb cards are more expensive that the 1gig card, but its probably worth it, right?

or maybe ill just get two 1gig cards.....decisions decisions

You won't have any backup capability at all?

And i really can't see why 2x512mb may be a benefit... infact, if you only have one, and it stays in your camera... unless you lost your camera, you won't lose the SD card. And if your camera was destroyed, unless it was in a fire or dropped in the ocean, the SD card would still work.

no, i dont see how. ill be hiking the appalachian trail. dont see where i would get access, unless i come off the trail to get food and happen to pass by an internet cafe or something.

im just wondering how often the cards become corrupt. i had an sd card at work recently that i had to reformat cause i kept getting errors. just wondering how often that kinda stuff happens.

Omce these cards get into the field, the really dont fail that often. So if it's from a reputable company there shouldn't be much to worry about. I should mention that I'm an FA engineer for a flash card maker.

There's no moving parts... so really, i can't see how a card that's inside a camera can get damaged.

I won't say, but having to reformat it generally is not a problem with that card. The camera messes up the filesystem on the card. The fact that you could still write to it means the card is ok. I've seen much worse than FAT corruption.

Yeah, 1GB, even 2GB, isn't a lot.

i was in washington DC last weekend. i had 3 cards: 1 512, 1 128, and 1 256. i used them ALL up and i only really shot pictures on sunday.

i'm in BIG trouble when i go on a trip and don't have the ability to upload to a computer. thankfully, my 700m and a USB CF card reader will suffice for such purposes.

well, i just up and quit my job cause i was sick of sitting at my desk. and i decided i wanted to do something cool and that was my choice. today was actually my last day.

I'm just use to shoting in RAW format now...fills up a 1GB card pretty fast...

the sd300 is a great camera for that trip...have fun. I love the AT.
