From what you see posted on forums, it appears that Apple is much more careful about shipping a "perfect" LCD with no backlight leaking and no dead pixels.

With Dell it appears about half the monitors send out have that to some extend. Depending on how picky the user is and what he does with it (who cares about backlight leaks in MS word?) you can send it back for replacement as often as you wish, at least that is my understanding.

The 30" requires the dual-link DVI video card.

The more appropriate comparision would be the Dell 24" and the Apple 23" inch. Both run at normal video cards and are similar in spec. The Apple one is IIRC $2000, the Dell one $1200 and you can use lots of rebates with the Dell one. The Apple display will give you more quality control before it is shipped to you, see first sentense.

Alas, if you have a SLI setup and want to continue to use it, you cannot use the Apple 30", period.

Personally I would like to have a 1.67GHz 15" Powerbook with the dual link DVI option and the 30" display. But that is a $6000 combo. If you compare that to a FX-55 with SLI 6800 Ultras and two Dell displays it is not really economical.

Where are you getting 2405's for $800?? Hook me up with that deal  :)

R

There was a deal for them 810 + tax. Which was about 860 ish. Most people didn't get that one though. Most got it for 860 + tax ~910 Either way great deal for an amazing monitor. I my self got one for 860 shipped and another for 910 shipped. Sold one of them of course.

Boy, I wish I could get a 2405 for $800.

Since the 2405 pretty much is only available now for 1200, I'd say apple cinema

IMO, this beats both

a single link DVI can push this, and its much bigger than apple or dell

and not much more money than the $1200 24", $800 (and thats from expensive crutchfield!).. for 13" more!!

Easily dominating Apple and Dell.

Heck, if I could get it for $860, I'd buy two as well - one for me, one for the wife :)

However, you may have to site pretty far away to see everything. For starters it is too large to be up close and despite the 1920x1080 res, it would not be very crisp (especially for text).

That 37" TV has about 60 DPI.

Not too far from 12" VGA which is about 66 DPI.

ya its a little big to sit right next to obviously, but 1080p it completely high res enough for a PC screen.. there are alot of ppl here who dont run anywhere near 1080 (1920x1080)

even on a 37", that would be impressive

1080 is the resolution im shooting for in all my new PC LCDs and TVs

The $200ish PNY Verto 6600GT Dual DVI + HDTV 128MB DDR3, part # VCG6600GAPB is dual-link capable. After finding the 30" cinema display on sale at Fry's for $1994 today I jumped on it. I'm typing this from it and a 3.2ghz pc now. :)

I have a 30 inch Apple and am running at full resolution with a dual link DVI Dell 6800 GTO that I bought on EBay. Yes, it is dual link DVI and running at full resolution. So there is no real reason to say you can't use this 30 inch monster on a PC without using a QUadro or the like. This issue has been beaten to death on the Apple cinema display forums. Gaming is great on this monitor.

I say get ONE 2405FPW and use the rest of the money towards an HDTV/Sound System/projector yadda yadda. Plenty of way to burn money.

If you're not going to use the 2405FPW for games and movies, then do one better and get 2 2001FPW . more screen space.

2 dell 2405FPW is just plain stupid, you'll end up with an unnaturally wide screen space which is uncomfortable.

so wait.. you need an Apple V/C to use the Cinema Display?

A Mac Lovin Friend of mine told me that was just PC propaganda. I'll never personally buy any Apple product, so I have to ask. Is that True?

All Apple displays from recent years can be run on PCs, even those with ADC connectors (although those require an adapter). All recent cinema displays are DVI, so they run on PCs. the 30" uses dual-link DVI due to its insanely high resolution. Very few PC video cards support this standard at the moment, but there are cards that will run it. The main reason is that this standard is still somewhat niche, as the resolutions it allows for only come in very expensive screens such as the 30" cinema display. It is mainly marketed towards content creation pros, but some enterprising gamers are latching on to these large screens and screen res's too.

Gotcha,

Thanks for a solid response. So it's not apple itself, but the wacky 25x16 res.

Of course, this prolly makes my buddy right. The lesser 23" panels, with 19x12 res, will run on normal V/C's :(

I have a 30" Apple Cinema Display on my G5 (connected via a Radeon X800XT Mac Edition). Its a beautiful display. Simply amazing.
Cheap, no. But I was able to get Apple's education faculty discount.
I'm was thinking about a 2405FPW for my PC, but opted for 2 x 2001FPs instead.

But the 30" really is a beauty (and out of 4 megapixels, not a single defect).

you dont need a mac to run the lcd. you just need a dual-link capable video card, such as the 512mb 6800 ultra, which is the cheapest you can get for dual-link aside from workstation gfx cards.
