Which is better _overclocked_, X800XL or 6800GT?

At 408/1.11 I really haven't came across anything I can't handle. Admittedly, I tend to only play in 1280x1024 as 1600x1200's refresh rate is 60hz on my monitor, and that really just bugs the eyes.

How did you monitor if it was stable and safe at those settings?

BTW to add to the thread. an x800xl PCI-E costs around $279, while a 6800GT AGP costs $290 now. Granted PCI-E is more futureproof, but you are talking about cards that can last for 2 years and then you can build a new system or just get a new motherboard. I know I'm going AGP route for my next build that is coming up.

I would advise against that.. but it's your money.

look just wait untill the g70 comes out. then the gt will be as cheap as the xl. then you buy the gt. the xl gets higher scores in pretty much every bench especially half life 2 EXCEPT DOOM 3. the game isn't taht good (if u ever played it) but quake 4 is going to kick ass. i was gonna get an xl but that was a month ago...and it would make more sense to just get a cheaper gt or ultra. (2 ultras are supposedly faster than a gt like g70)

Definatley go with the Radeon X800XL. It has better drivers that are updated every month unlike nVidia drivers which are updated only every 6 months. The X800XL I've heard can be overclocked to X800XT speeds and beyond. It's also better in Direct3D in which most games are made and, of course, it's cheaper!🙂

Nvidia drivers are just as good. The betas are updated frequently and as far as things are concerned both companies produce stable drivers. In case of Nvidia they release updates less often, but with more fixes at once as opposed to small changes every month. Depends on the user's preference. Either way this isnt a selling point.

X800XL cannot be overclocked to x800xt speeds. Sorry.

Sure there are a lot of D3D games but the difference in those games between 6800GT and X800XL is minimal. But when you compare games with heavy stencil shadows like Doom 3 and Chronicles of Riddick (expect FEAR and Quake 4 to be faster on Nvidia too), then things dont look as great for x800xl.

For AGP => $300 6800GT is best bet
For PCIe => $260 X800XL is good value

But performance wise, 6800GT @ Ultra speeds is faster.
