Which is better, 15-20 minutes of running/jogging or 1 hour of brisk walking?

I've been going for long walks with the wife lately. We usually go for a brisk walk for about an hour and we cover just a little less than 4 miles. What I'm wondering however is would it be more effective for weight loss to run for 15-20 minutes or just continue with the hour walk at a brisk pace.

The walking is probably doing more good... don't they usually say to keep your heart rate up for atleast 30 min?

From what I've read, running and walking the same distance burn the same amount of calories. The benefit to running/jogging is the cardivascular workout.

I'd guess that walking is better from an overall health perspective because it limits the impact on the joints and keeps your heart going for a longer period of time, which is good.....

It depends. The point is to get to a targeted heart rate for at least 20 minutes sustained. So if the brisk walk doesn't get your heart rate high enough, then it defeats the purpose. Google around to see the recommended heart rate target for your age bracket.

Brisk walking for an hour is far more effective for weight loss than 15-20 mins of running.

Doesn't it kill you to routinely do something so aimless? Couldn't you find something constructive to do, that would also be a form of exercise? Walking, jogging, running on a treadmill or stationary bike just seems so... useless! Why not deliver papers or fliers and make money while you're wandering around? How about washing cars? That can work up a sweat if you hustle, and pay well enough. There must be hundreds of things to do that would be far more productive!

He is walking with his wife and building his relationship in the process... that is VERY productive, ESPECIALLY if he wants to do an hour of brisk boinking later on.

Its not really bad, me and the wife get to spend some time together which frees me up for valuable video game and comic book time later on. :D However the brisking boinking for an hour sounds like a lot of fun too.

I think it depends, but from my experience, I've lost a lot of weight by running. It's the quickest way to loose weight. My friend lost about 50lbs in about 6 months by running track like crazy.

My wife likes to walk too. F that! She doesn't walk briskly at all. She meanders VERY slowly. I can't stand it! I'd rather ride bikes, but that doesn't thrill her. There is a couple up the street who walk and talk. They are the most dower people I've ever run across! Getting a hello out of them is like pulling teeth.

Only thing worse I can think of is actually paying a fee to exercise. That just blows me away.

Well, you often pay for the use of equipment you wouldn't have access to otherwise. Granted, you could be lifting groceries at home rather than weights at the gym, but at least for me, I don't know anyone that has a pool in their back yard big enough for swimming laps in.

From what I've read, the most effective exercise for weight loss includes short bursts of activity. Thus, running for 15-20 minutes would be more productive than one hour of brisk walking if you follow this formula: "sprint" for roughly 9 seconds, and then rest for I believe around 12-15 seconds. Do this for the duration of your run/biking/whatever. It's been proven to burn fat somewhere around three times as efficiently as sprinting for 24 seconds and then resting for twice that.

So basically, cycle the activity very frequently for best results. Total time shouldn't exceed 20 minutes or so.

I've read that before, I think they call that kind of training HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training). The only thing is that I've heard so many different angles on HIIT, some say its a good way to exercise but not as efficient as working out for a longer period over a steady pace and vice versa. I wish there was a more solid explanation or article to clear up the misunderstandings on that form of exercising.

Been in the trades my whole life, and I've never felt the need to exercise beyond what my job entailed. When my son got into wrestling, I bought a Weider Home Gym for a couple hundred bucks. That was several years ago, and I doubt it's been used 10 times. I sure as hell won't use it! Swimming laps has got to be about as boring as jogging or walking. I think they make a device you could use for swimming at home. The Perfect gift for your fitness friends.. :D

one hour of brisk boinking is actually better than both combined

agreed too bad I'm married and after 20 minutes would rather watch TV show about walking or running.

I'm a bodybuilder, and let me tell you something, walking does NOTHING. You can very easily take brisk walks every day for the rest of your day and not lose a pound. Low intensity cardio (most stationary bike and aerobics programs, etc) has been proven to be near-useless when it comes to losing fat.

On the other hand, high intensity cardio (jogging, sprinting) does wonders. Try jogging for 20 minutes a day, and watch the pounds melt away. Or you can continue taking your brisk walks and pretend they're actually doing something just like every other person who's too lazy to put more effort into it.

I race walk (it's a sport!) 4 miles in just under 45 minutes... I can't really hold a conversation when I am doing it, which is what you want to achieve.

If you can relax and talk, you aren't putting enough into it. As long as you are having to focus on breathing and pumping those legs and arms, you are making progress.

That said, nice long brisk walks with your wife are good for your physical health AND your relationship health, so I would keep that up, too. :)

I have NEVER heard anyone recommend low intensity cardio over HIIT. I'm on HIIT and it's great.
